Isla Mujeres, Q. Roo, Mexico

We’ve been here in Mexico since the middle of December and having a wonderful time. We came over on Sam Hankin’s new boat, “Crystal Blue”, a 36 foot Albermarle that he took delivery on last August (pretty small for such a trip). We had to carry two 100 gallon fuel tanks in the cockpit to have enough for the 345 mile journey to Mexico from Key West. We had 75 gallons left when we got here.

The sailfish bite here is truly world class. We can’t carry the equipment that the big boats carry, but we still managed to catch a lot of fish, averaging six or eight a day. We had four days of 10 or more and caught 16 one day. Sam had a few groups of his friends from Florida down to fish with us, and Dan, Maddison and Brian Bell came too. Thanks for a great time, guys.

We also went to an underwater mountain called Arrowsmith one day to fish for wahoo. We ended up with three wahoo, the biggest being 45 lb., and a dolphin. We also had a marlin bite in 1400 feet. While sailfishing, we also caught a blackfin tuna, wahoo and dolphin. The local restaurants cook fish for you.

Right now we’re waiting on a weather window to cross back over to Key West. I’m flying back to Edisto tomorrow and wait until it shows up. When I get back to Mexico, we’re going to Tampa to have some Albemarle warranty work done and then heading back to Edisto. I’ll post a bunch of pictures on my web site when I’m home.

The pictures I’m going to post were taken by my wife, Susie. She came over twice, once with Dan and Kimber and once by herself. She did a great job running around the boat snapping photographs. I don’t think I mentioned that the seas here are normally five feet or maybe a little better. It ain’t easy taking pictures. Thanks, Susie.
