Isle of Palms Alcohol Report, 6/23/2013

Reported to me second hand from my wife this evening…

Carol loves the beach…me, not so much…one of my daughters is in town this week and went to the beach with Carol after church this morning.

Shortly after their arrival around 12:30 PM or so, she witnessed a fully uniformed IOP police officer, on foot, approach a group of 6-8 adults somewhere in their late 50’s setting up a tent on the beach. They have rented an ocean front home on IOP yearly for the last several years for vacation. They like it here.

The police officer issued them a ticket for $133.00 for open container alcohol on the beach. He told them that he could have issued them a ticket for up to $1,000.00 if he deemed it necessary. He also told them that if they had alcoholic beverages on their private beach walkover 15’ feet away at the top of the stairs, that they could not be fined. They moved their cooler.

The IOP police officer continued walking on foot west toward Charleston and came upon another group of 6 adults in their late 50’s reading books under a canopy/tent on the beach. Beer in a solo cup, another alcohol fine, no loud music, no trouble, just beer in a solo cup. Carol did not determine the amount of the fine from the offenders.

Be careful.

Were they checking coolers or just what you have in a cup? Went to Sullivans a few weeks ago with the family, had beer in the cooler but decided to take it out before we hit the sand. I love beer, but I don’t love it enough to pay a $100 fine.

While I may disagree with citing 50 year olds for a beer on the beach its still the law. It helps keep the beaches clean and enjoyable for families. The party goers/ tourists would make a mess of the place.

This is only true if the police can/don’t enforce the other laws on the books. Drunk in public, littering, disturbing the peace…

So they create a law to ruin it for all

I have to brag a little on the Folly Beach Five O. Even after the “riot” last summer and the banishment of alcohol from the beaches, enforcement has been comfortable and reasonble. Here is what I have seen of the Folly police on the beach. The uniformed officers come cruising slowly down the beach on 4-wheelers. They look ahead and make very little eye contact with folks on the beach. They do not dismount from the 4-wheelers, that I have seen. They are not out to bust anyone. They are out to keep the peace. We did not know what to expect when the ban became law, but the Folly Five O has handled it like mature adults.

Saw them handing them out on Sullys today. DNR popping people too.

What!I don’t see them that much at all. Maybe there is not enough of them. I’m there Sat and Sun from sun up to sun own. I have the birds eye view from the pier. I see pretty much what goes on. If you break the the law, you will pay. This is what pisses me off. This past Sunday, 6 punks were walking on the pier smoking a joint with no cops around. They smoked all the way down the pier ,all the way down the beach in and out through the crowd. What’s wrong with this picture? People don’t obey the LAWS or don’t care.

The intent of my post was to tell folks to be careful.

They are enforcing the law.

so your saying it’s ok to drink? but be careful.

Good to know, thanks for the heads up.

I agree. Even though I don’t drink beer, I don’t mind someone else who is a mature individual having a beer. But too many people use “having a beer” as a chance to act like a pathetic moron, and they tend to hang out in numbers like most other insects.

Moral judgment under girds the entire structure of laws and is necessary for the rational structure of any significant statute. The idea that our laws can stand independent of moral foundation is senseless.----- Albert Mohler.

I got the same ticket while fishing along Breech Inlet years ago. There were three of us splitting a 12-pack. We were drinking out of Solo cups and sitting in chairs hanging out. Two cops were watching us with huge binoculars from a golf cart on the other side of the inlet. They came over and asked us if we read the signs that said no alcohol. We said no. I walked over to where we had parked and asked one of the officers to show me this sign. There was no sign. So the other cop started being a jerk about it, and after the two of them arg
