Water temperature have past the mid eighties point in the harbor and that means that the early evening bite is on with the “Poor Mans Tarpon.” Lady fish abound this time of year and are known for their feeding frenzies around your favorite dock, or your favorite shell bed. While these fish can prove to be somewhat of a pest when you are targeting trout on topwater around dusk, they can also prove to be a day saver. Known for their powerful hits on topwater baits and spectacular aerial shows these fish make up for their reputation as terrible table fare with their great sportfish fights.
Zara Spooks and Bomber’s Badonk-a-donk topwater baits prove to be irresistible to these hard fighting fish. Geared up with ultra light spinning or bait casting gear will allow you to feel the full effects of this fish’s powerful strike and spectacular aerial defense tactics. If the fish are not hitting on top water, other baits that prove effective include grubs, spoons, and live bait under popping corks.
While these fish show up in the early summer, it seems the hotter the water temperatures the more plentiful the fish; thus August is prime time. While these fish may be taken during the day they are most active at dusk and into the evening. Rips, structure, and lights all seem to help hold these fish into concentrated areas. If dock lighting is not available a fishing light such as “The Green Light” will serve to bring these fish in.
Get out after work and try a Ladies Night venture, you are sure to be impressed with their wild antics.
Tight lines…
