Jack Leggett

I’m kind of torn about this one, not sure if it was a good thing or not. I guess time will tell.

growing up a Clemson fan, who went to the College of Charleston, I do hope the College can hang onto coach Monte Lee…

I know you don’t care but I will give you my opinion.
When CU’s rival was going to or winning the CWS over and over, it put a sour taste in the CU faithful. Meaning they started calling for the head coach to go. This year CU had a decent year but because it wasn’t great it was an good opportunity to get rid of him.

With that said, I do think after so many years it is good to have a change. mix it up…But I think a coach with that much time deserves to go on his terms.
Maybe he was given the option, but he would not leave…I don’t know.

It’s not often I agree with you, but IMO, you are pretty much spot on on this one. Me personally, I am not a big baseball fan, so have not followed CU baseball too much, but it does seem a lot of focus has been put on the program in the last few years. Change was needed, not sure how it went down, but 22 yrs is a long time. Some fans cannot be pleased no matter what.

With that being said, I wish Coach Legette the best in his future endevors and thank him for the 22 long years he faithfully put into CU Baseball… Hopefully the fans who are happy he is gone can keep their comments classy.

Clemson sucked this year, how they made the tourney is a mystery because they didn’t deserve to be there. Leggett’s won some games over the years but the last 8 or so has seen a decline in the program and focus from the players.

I agree that after a time, it’s good to get new blood in there. Leggett knew early on that this was likely his last year. Hopefully they’ll hire someone young, aggressive and who will target in state and kids in the SE region.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

They lost to Charleston Southern… Nail in the coffin.

I think my biggest gripe with him was that he insisted on recruiting the NE, passing up extremely good players who wanted to go to Clemson.

I met him once while I was in school up there. He struck me as an arrogant jackass in the few minutes I spoke with him. It could have been just the mood he was in at the time, but that’s the vibe I got from him.

They lost a lot of games that a Clemson baseball team should never have lost. Those things happen from time to time in baseball but they happened with regularity to this years team. Lose to a Cha So team then go sweep a top 10 club only to come back and lose to a PC or Winthrop type.

Time to find a good young coach from a SE school and preferably with ties to Clemson.

I’m not torn one dadgum bit…

I hate he is gone.

Coach Leggett deserves to be in the hall of fame…along side all of the other “old school”’ coaches that helped promote college baseball to it’s place among elite athletic events. He just doesn’t deserve to keep his job after refusing to adjust and grow according to the reality of today’s players and demands. Today’s college baseball player is typically white, middle class, or upper middle class, whose parents can afford to pay for his tuition, books, car, and off campus apartment… With 11 1/2 scholarships available for 25 player rosters, they better be. Today’s player comes to the college level with vastly better skills based on better coaching, experience, and physical conditioning due to higher and higher levels of game based competition via travel baseball. They’ve had paid for one on one position and hitting based instruction since middle school. All of that is a giant ego bruise to hard case “my way or the highway” coaches who are used to ruling via intimidation. Those coaches will struggle to recruit the talent that used to seek them out. Check out the mid major programs competing against the “Traditional” big boys of college baseball. It’s common for them to beat them, not exceptional. That’s because they go to those schools to play, and not compete in some kind of Iron Man competition for playing time at fabled Clemson University. New, young, socially savvy coaching rules the landscape in college baseball, and Leggett’s time is over. If he’s smart he’ll leave with his dignity intact. It’s his choice.
