Jigs In the Surf

I have been thinking about trying to fish jigs in the surf as a good way to fish during the week. My co-workers get upset when I bring month old stinky dead fish and put it in the fridge.

I tried once and wasn’t successful, I was trying to use a gulp shrimp. Anyone have any pointers on how to select the right kind and what kind of spots on the beach to use it at?

Up on the N.C. coast they use larger jig heads with a bucktail on it. You can tip it with a strip of cut bait or squid. I have had success in the surf with flounder, trout, small reds and bluefish using a 1 ounce bucktail jig with either a Gulp 4" pearl colored shrimp or a Gulp swimming mullet.

Jack Taylor

Jack - I can picture the mullet trailer on a bucktail - how would you describe rigging one with a shrimp?

Thanks!

I have caught some very nice trout in the surf at IOP using a popping cork and new penny gulp shrimp

In the surf, I would recommend at least a 1oz. jig head on light line. I’m a mono guy, right now I have 12lb. spooled on my Boca 40 and a 7’ Penn Squadron. Casting with a wind blowing can be a pain. We fished Sullivans on Sat. Had a good 15 blowin’ straight in, still managed 30+ yard casts.

Here is what I throw when the Trout are around. And yes, it is 6" total. Go big or go home. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks, I’m going to give it a shot one day next week.
