July 4th First Sail (pics)

Why not just kill it and be legal?

Good work John! I got some gas $

“Why not just kill it and be legal?”

or why not just shut down all offshore fishing?

Oh, by the way very nice fish, cant wait to get my first Sail. How do they taste?, just in case I want to take a picture.

Dude, do you need a . Just saying that if you “SAY” you kilt it and used it for crab bait, then there will be no discussion about the legality of your “Glory Shots”. Just not the example I set for my kids, but to each his own.

Congrats on your first sail! Thats awesome

To quote an accomplished charter captain, " it’s nothing but a king mackeral with a beak"

“Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, he’ll sit on his boat and drink beer all day”

Taste like chicken.

Appreciate that.

hope DNR doesnt see that, as Im sure youll get a call…

“If you can’t stand behind our soldiers, then try standing in front of them”

How can the DNR prove by that picture that the fish was:

a. Caught in SC
b. Not put in the fish box

Nice catch! Thanks for hypothetically taking the well deserved quick picture and putting it back in the water to catch another day. I am glad that hypothetically you did not follow the law and dry it out.

Again nice catch, this is what it is all about. Good times on the water with good friends. That picture will be displayed proudly and talked about for years to come!!

Behind this helm stands a sickness that not even a women can cure.

So it’s legal to kill the fish but illegal to give the 95% chance of living buy safely reviving and properly releasing it? Good call their DNR. “Here’s your sign!” If someone was arrested for this would they make the “dumbest criminals” list?

It is legal to kill the fish if it meets minimum size. It is illegal to boat it, and then release, regardless of size.

I understand totally that people want to take pictures of their “first billfish”…but I also think it is kind of stupid to post the pics on the www.

Hope you also have an HMS permit on board.

PS, congrats on your sail.

good work on the sailing fish.

let us know how it tasted on the grill.

the law is a federal one not a state one. Who gives a crap if he pulls it out the water. No one seems to mind when you’re hoisting a tarpon, bull red, or anything else for that matter. Its ok to enter a king tournament wherre theres no intention of saving the fish to eat (usually becomes property of the tournament) But somehow tge folks on this site think they are masters of conservation: do any of the people
Bashing him always take only what they eat themselves, always use circle hooks, carry a dehooker on their boat, vent their bottom fish, etc. Get off your collective soapboxes. I can promise you, when my sons catch their first we will hoist that mud dart high and dry for a dozen photos. Smile big boys the Feds are in their chopper on the way.

You are missing the point here florida boy. The point is that taking it out of the water decreases the fish’s chance of survival. If your going to kill it, fine, take it out of the water. If not, leave it in the water and take your picture and send the fish on its way. I don’t know if its true but supposdely sails can get their guts crushed easliy by handeling them out of the water when holding them under the stomache.

I agree you really have to take the anglers first sail out of the water for a quick picture. After that leave them in the water.

Oh yeah, Congrats on your first!

Just curious, can someone quote the regulation that states that?

Question #3. I also have another updated PDF file that states the same, but I have not been able to locate it online…

lets see what I can dig up…

http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/sfa/hms/Compliance_Guide/Rec/Rec_Compliance_Guide_Billfish.pdf

top of page 18

I’m not looking for a F.A.Q. sheet, looking for the exact CFR or US Code that states this regulation.

I have no problems with a picture and a quick release of an aglers first fish.
