Went out to 130’ to check out some numbers and possible dive. Did not see enough on the finder to dive it. Came in to the subway cars and did part of a tank. It was kind of cool seeing the cars underwater like that. Lots of bait in the cars but no meat fish. Several aj’s cruising through them. We cut that dive short due to lack of fish.
2nd dive we Hit a ledge coming in with the remainder of our tank from the first dive. I took a nice Red snapper, 2 slippers and a spiny lob. Had to let 2 lobsters go that had eggs. Les my dive partner got a couple of average grouper on that dive.
3rd Dive Moved to another small ledge that had several lobsters that i could not reach. Stuck a nice 4-5 pound flounder. Man those offshore flounder are tasty. Big difference from inshore flounder. Visibility was real bad and while going along the ledge i spotted the BIG DADDY. This grouper had to be 50-60#.
With the bad vis it was too late by the time i saw him. I got a real good look at his tail and this was not a jewfish. Les also saw the same grouper and the same thing happened to him. I could have shot the fish but it wouldn’t have been a clean kill. I would rather pass on a fish than take a chance at just wounding it. Will be going back to visit him as soon as possible.
