Kayak fishing Club

There has been some talk of starting a club in the area. Original thoughts were Charleston Yak Anglers. What do ya’ll think about calling the club the Lowcountry Paddle anglers or LCPA for short. This would incorporate our yak fishing bretheren from Beaufort, Hilton Head, etc.?? www.lcpa.net does not seem to exist.

Low Country Yak Anglers??? www.lcya.net looks to be available as well.

Just a thought, What do ya’ll think???

DD

I kinda like Low Country Yak anglers D. Did you get my email? I have been looking in to the club scene and finding out how the whole thing works and such, there seem to be two trains of thought for it. The way TKAA (VA Beach club) works is that folks have to pay a dues and there are meetings and such. Te dues help pay for the web site, insurance so on and so forth. The insurance covers the club officers and other members in the event that something goes wrong during a club event. The meetings are pretty much what ever they want from guest speakers on various topics to club buisness to planning whose fishing where when and who wants to go with. The Jax scene seem a little different, one guy, Mike Cogan, pretty much runs everything. Now I am still talking to him to get a full understanding but from what I understand now, he developed the web site, he puts together the tournament, if something happens to him, I’m not sure what happens to their organization. They have no insurance as a group, they pay no dues. I figured we should find an inbetween.

Thats why they call it fishing, not catching

Hey DD

I thought the idea from last year was to get together at some local watering hole/pub to share information and maybe plan a “Show-N-Go” trip of some sort. Why form a club, design logos, buy insurance etc. if only a small number of people are truly interested in a club. Seems to me that most of the people who showed up at the Shem Creek Bar & Grill (I think that’s where we met?) for the first meeting last year were leaning more towards an informal club. I say hold of few of these informal meetings first and see who shows up.

Soooo…who’s up for meeting somewhere for a “cold beverage of choice” and plan a trip?

I think Bob’s idea is a starting place. By meeting informally, we can gauge interest. The group of people meeting can decide how the group should evolve. If someone feels the need/desire to reserve one of the web addresses, that might be wise.

Just my .02 that no one asked for.

Name the time and place…

Okay next step……Lets get a head count of who is “really interested” in meeting somewhere convenient.

Who’s interested, which area do you live in and where do you suggest we meet? Depending on the where the majority of interested people live, we’ll pick a place. How does this Thursday sound?

I’m interested and I live in West Ashley. For this area (West Ashley) I would suggest Gene’s Haufbrau or 10-Seventeen (10-17 is a small smoke free bar/German pub) both of which are on Savannah hwy.

I am interested. I live in NW Mt. P. Some places in town are almost a half hour. So, West Ashley isn’t too far to go.
Smoke free is a bonus for me. But not a necessity.

I can’t express enough how interested I am, however, I live down in GA and can’t make it up for meetings regularly. My wife and I come up about once or twice a month and I fish with who ever is available. I would really like to be involved in this, so what’s the best way to input? Is this it? Anyhow, the reason I mentioned insurance is that it was brought up to me by Josh Hall of CCPRC when we were trying to put together that tournament at the festival. I’m not sure if we need it, but it didn’t sound like a bad idea. I’m sorting through the info but there’s alot of it. What I am looking at is the ACA paddle clubs set up and looking at what is/would be best for us. If we intend to try to put together a tournament like the one in Jax or VA beach then it might not be a bad idea, if we aren’t looking to do that then maybe we don’t need it. I would recommend however that we plan a get together a little more in advance and put flyers in the local shops about it. Time out, Chas Angler, Ludens, etc have all expressed interest in supporting this. I just know that there are a lot of folks out there who may be serious about this but don’t know about this site or don’t have a computer. maybe a little quip on the fishing page in the sunday paper wouldn’t be a bad idea.

I love the idea but to meet Thursday is too soon of a notice. The same thing happened the last time I think and I was unable to attend that meeting. If we are goin to be a club then everyone should be allowed the opportunity to participate.

“Live like you will live forever but live like you will die tomorrow.”

I’m game just need to know time and place.

I only spend weekends in C-ton. There may or may not be others like me- I drive there 2-4 weekends monthly to yak and fish. I’d love to participate given that constraint. Events in clubs seem to occur on weekends but meetings seem to occur during workweek.

Would also like to see on-the-water instructional events, and not just tournaments.

PS: to DD if you read this- my daughter loves the WS Ripper in creeks and Folly surf; and the adults, particularly novices, have really enjoyed the Native 12. Thanks again.

Hey MarkBob

WTF…., Did you read “Step One”??? There is no “Club” yet and you’re worrying about club dues, club officers, club logos, guest speakers, insurance, web sites, tournaments, Blah-blah-blah…

We having a hard time getting more than ten people to meet to even think about a club!!! Let’s follow the lead of YakontheFly and the Cutmullet who say “I have an idea for a kayak fishing trip, here it is, who wants to go?”

Follow the “KISS Principle”, one step at a time. The “build it and they will come” worked in Fields of Dreams but I don’t think it’ll work here, right now. Sorry to be harsh but that’s the way I see it.

The only reason I see to even have a club name is for advertising “informal” meetings, nothing more.

Hey Bob, calm down man, all I’m trying to do is gather information so that we can make informed decisions about whatever we decide to do. If we decide that all we really want to do is get together for happy hour once in a while and post here then I guess that we don’t need much of anything that we don’t already have. But if there are enough folk out there that would like to see more like sjpsc and bassin, then maybe we need something extra. Like I said, I’m just trying to digest info so I can present it should the need arise. By the way, thank you for the name, its nice to put a name with a screne name. Its even better to put a face to one. I look fwd to meeting everyone. Mine really is Mark Bob.

Hey Markbob

Trust me, I’m plenty calm, I knew I should have tossed in a few smilely faces . I like I said, sorry if it sounded “harsh”. It’s just that in 2 or3 emails you keep mentioning things like “club insurance”, we’re not there yet man. You’re right that it’s all good stuff to know, but for now I’d rather be working on my gear or kayaking than worrying about the details of a highly structured club where none exsists. If that’s what you want to do (worrying about the details of a highly structured club), then knock yourself out. When there are 15-20 hard core group members then maybe it’s the time to think about the design and function of a club. For now let’s shoot for founding 5 to 10 hard core group members and take it from there.

So when you do met me, I probably owe you a cold beer or two. In the meantime, if you want to put a face to my name, check out the photos I’ve posted here, I’m the guy holding the Redfish:sunglasses:.

Somewhere in West Ashley would be better for me as I’m on Edisto.

When you guys get ready to start a club, email me for advice. I operate www.fcka.net and was part of www.tkaa.net when it started. I can give you the advice that was given me, and you can form your own opinion from it. Good luck, and you will learn more about fishing with club member than you will by yourself. Keep it friendly, its just fishing.

Kayak Fishing for fun

I am interested in the club. I live in Columbia, so I couldn’t attend regualar meetings, but would love to get a recap of what was discussed and hook up on fishing trips, tournaments, etc… Based growth of posters in this forum from a year ago, it seems kayak fishing in the lowcountry/carolina’s is growing rapidly. I think that this time next year there will be double the people interested in Kayak fishing. I say start the club informal and let it grow from there. I just need an excuse to get down to Charleston to go fishing!

go back and look at the posts from last year when this was brought up.most of the people that have been on here for awhile didnt seem interested in any formal club.i was at that one meeting also and that was what i got from that as well.start informal and see what you get.

gots to get out for some trout
