Kayak Fishing Tournament

Hello Paddlers,

I have just been informed that Haddrells Point Tackle and Supply are putting on a Kayak Fishing Tournament on October 21st. Over the next few weeks they will be sending out more information. They are also looking for a few sponsors for the tournament. They could use a little help to make this a success so if you are interested or know someone that is please contact Dee Oliver at 573-3474.

I would also like some help getting this out to anyone that may be interested in participating in the tournament and some ■■■■■■■■ on the following questions. The responses that I get back will help determining how they will set up the tournament and how many people plan to participate. This is the first kayak fishing tournament in our area so please help us make it a success so that there will be more in the future.

(1) Do you plan to participate in the kayak fishing tournament?

(2) Would you want to allow motorized boats to transport your kayak to a fishing area?

(3) Will this be your first time fishing from a kayak?

(4) Are you a lady angler and plan to participate?

Please email me @ keff_g@hotmail.com with your replies any an commets you may have.

Thanks,

Keith Goff, VP

Hello Paddlers?? WTF? nice intro.

I dont under stand how you can have a kayak fishing tournament and use motors…what is the point?

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, you’ll be a mile from them, and you’ll have their shoes.

Sound like a pretty straight forward email to me. This is the kayak forum, kayakers are paddlers, so…
Hello paddlers makes perfect sense to me.

The wuestion is, should tourny fishermen be allowed to transport via kayak and fish. My answer is no, it should be paddle power only.

No need to be a jaska$$. You sir should probably stay away from the tournament.

Go Noles!!!

The reason I ask about motor boats is because Haddrells is looking at allowing them. They need to make sure that they have enough participants and sponsors for the tourny. If you don’t think they should be used, then let them know and help get some poeple out for it!!!

Thanks PADDLERS

i cant see a kayak tournament with motor boats allowed.paddle power only.if they are allowing or looking at allowing motor boats, then it wont be a kayak tournament will it?seems to me one of these kayak fishermen ought to help them set it up.are they scared they wont get enough entries or what?

Take it easy Dolphin no need to get so upset. I agree that you cant have a kayak fishing tournament and use a motor boat to get you to the fishing hole. I think you should be awarded prizes on the biggest trout and flounder. As for spottails maybe the fish with the most spots would be better than the honor system with respect to size and length… Just about everyone has a digital camera these days.

do you know those people at haddrells dolphin?or,if anyone else knows these people, talk to em.personally,i dont know them, and im new to this yak fishin.

ps would like to see a trout only tournament this fall sometime.maybe if we get this club rollin we can do it.

Sea legs, if you meant well, then sorry to jump on you. Just getting tired of people who seem to do nothing but talk trash. (not refering to you, just in general.)

Surfman and others, I have talked with Dee at Hadrells, and expressed my belief that using a motor boat to get to the fishing grounds should not be allowed. This is their tournament, so what ever they decide is up to them. CALL HADRELL’S and tell them that you would not like to see motor boats allowed.

We (Time Out) are looking at being a sponsor for this event and trying to get some prizes donated from some of our reps. Hopefully we can get Wilderness Systems to offer a boat as a grand prize. If not, we might just donate one ourselves. Still trying to figure out all the details.

Hope there are not any huge ballgames that saturday!

Go Noles!!!

well, keep us posted dolphin.sounds like you are on top of this.

ps i still say if we can get this club thing rollin we will know more about how much we could support an event like this, because we would have a number idea as far as giving the sponsor a definite answer on how many fishermen he could count on.plus,we can have our own tournaments and other “club fish days” etc.im very excited about this club idea as you can see.i see so many advantages to a club,i could go on and on.i hope it “floats”:sunglasses:

  1. Do you plan to participate in the kayak fishing tournament?
    Yes - 3 fishermen - 3 kayaks

(2) Would you want to allow motorized boats to transport your kayak to a fishing area?
No - Kayak tourney - no motor

(3) Will this be your first time fishing from a kayak?
No - probably fish 3-5 times a month from the yak

(4) Are you a lady angler and plan to participate?
No

Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people.

I think it’s a GREAT idea to have a kayak fishing tournament.

And I agree that being able to use a boat is a bad idea. To me, a big part of being a kayak fisherman is the physical ability to paddle to your spot and hit other spots if you’re honey hole aint producing. This shows both physical ability and wide fishing knowledge and experience, all of which should play a big role in determining the winner.

As far as how to hold the tournament…

I think a good idea would be for everyone to meet at a designated spot a day or two before the tourney. Haddrells or whoever is putting this on would then give everyone a “tournament marker.” Then, everyone goes fishing, and takes pictures of their catch next to this marker and a tape measure. The “tournament marker” is to ensure people aren’t turning in pictures from prior sessions. The marker could be anything!

The person to turn in the biggest fish in a pic wins. This is great, especially for redfishin, so we don’t have to kill fish for the tourney, and we can include the big boys.

This is how they hold kayak tournaments down in FL.

Anyone have any other thoughts?

You can count me in!, that is if boats aren’t allowed . Will conoes be allowed?

Kayak tourney sounds like alot of fun.

Livestoked, dude let up on the “how we did it in FL” b.s, no one cares.

Use discretion w/ pictures as you might have two VERY VERY close fish…someone could get upset over this if their fish didn’t win and they “absolutley knew they had that 1/8”. Just a suggestion though.

Old aunts used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, “You’re next.”

They stopped after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.

1 -2 yaks yes i will fish no boats not my first rodeo and no boats the picture idea not a good one because who holds a tourney where you win by length i fish 8 to 10 tourneys a year and have helped put on a few you always go by weight most tournaments dont put redfish in because of killing them off but your talking about tournaments with 100 to 150 entrys this will be a smaller tournament with not everyone catching and weighting a fish just go by dnr set limits and only allowed to weight on red species flounder trout redfish and bluefish with outstanding male female and youth angler under 16 main concern to figure out is the rules on weight in is there going to be a specific drop in to fish and return or fish anywhere and drive fish to weight in

I would do it but I have to go to Clemson Homecoming with the in-laws (all Clemnson grads) and cheer for whoever they are playing

If I was participating I would vote for a non motor tournament

Check the Jacksonville kayaks tournament rules I hear they do a good job with 150 plus kayaks partcipating.

No one likes the “most spots” idea?

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, you’ll be a mile from them, and you’ll have their shoes.

stretch - the burden is on the contestant to measure the fish properly, his saying “i knew it was bigger” is like a runner saying “i knew i was faster than i ran”…doesn’t matter… whoever puts on the tournament needs to give detailed directions on how the fish are to be measured (pinched tail or not, etc.) … everyone knows the rules, then plays by them, and if there’s still a tie, we got two winners or somekind of tiebreaker (how about # spots)

pat - i agree with you, that bringing the fish to dock is probably the best way to hold a tournament, but when we’re talking about protected fish like redfish, other options are needed…you don’t want to cap the tourney at 24" and you DEFINITELY don’t want to promote killing over-slot fish… for flounder or trout (those are your boys right stretch!) you can bring em in or whatever, but for redfish i think the photo idea or something like it is the call…

oh, and a kayak tourney w/o redfish at all doesn’t seem right … redfish are the main species kayak fishermen are after in the SE. Haddrells and the sponsors of this event are well aware of this fact, and I doubt they would fail to include in the contest that which makes the sport popular …

the shad club one of the bigger tournaments every year has redfish on their species list redfish are protected but the numbers are clilmbing greatly there is talks going on right now to move the slot limits and to up the # per day per person pictures are cool and all but no one goes by length a 21 inch fish can weight more than a 24 in fish if everyone is worried about the fish lets fry them all at the weight in
