Will be fishing out of new kayak soon…Wondering about anchoring in creeks around Pawleys and Murrell’s Inlet…How do you find the current to be… What type anchor should I purchase

I would avoid using a traditional anchor. Get you a stick it anchor pole & use it or back up to some grass or a bank. The current can get really strong, but not as bad up in the creeks. I bought several from a sponsor of this forum, great purchase so far. (2) 8ft 1/2 inch for my yaks & a bigger one for my boat.

I too use a homemade pole anchor, 8’, 1/2 fiberglass rod with a T handle tough I also carry a small grappling anchor for when the water is too deep to use the pole.

I like using a small 8-lb mushroom anchor…holds well in mud or hard bottom.

I prefer to use my anchor poles.....Thanks for the link, areeldrag....I just ordered their aluminum ends for all of my anchor poles.

Anchor trolley system for anchor?

I like them, allows you to position your yak either bow into the current or stern into the current. You can buy a kit or put your own together which I did.

have seen several videos on youtube showing installing the trolley…most leave me with questions…how did you do yours?

I bought 2 Harken Micro Cheek Blocks (see below), they can be bought at West Marine, etc…, mounted them, used 1/4 nylon line and put a S.S. snap link in the middle. I’ll try to post a pic or two if you need them. It isn’t hard and I wanted to use good materials and didn’t want to buy a kit. I like DIY stuff. My way is most assuredly not the only way, there are a lot of ways to make an anchor trolley and you can do it for less than I did. Heck, you could install 2 deck eyes, run your line through that and there’s your trolley for less than $5.

I’m still a newbie to kayak fishing, myself…about 7 months in fresh water and just a few trips in the salt…but in my opinion, an anchor trolley is a must have accessory. Between the wind and the current, a trolley system will allow lots of flexibility on positioning your yak.

I fish out of a kayak in Pawleys Island and Murrells Inlet frequently and would highly recommend using what DFreedom mentioned. You can make an easy DIY anchor trolley and stake out pole to use in shallow areas. A grappling anchor is cheap and works well in deeper spots. The currents can move pretty quick so anchoring will take some getting used to.

Also, try to keep close to the sides and make sure other boats see you as traffic can get pretty heavy. Especially if the weather is nice or if it’s a holiday. I’ve had boats fly past me and not even give a second look. Keep it safe and you’ll have a great time.

It’s a pretty basic DIY job…I put the Yak Attack cam lock trolley on mine. It came with backing plates for all of the components that bolt through the hull. The front was easy because I had access to the area via the front hatch. The back one was a little tougher because I didn’t have access to the inside of the hull. I watched a few videos on YouTube on how to rig it and install the backing plates using 550 para cord…worked like a champ. I have seen some installs just using screws, but I wanted the bolts and backing plates for strength…I plan on spending time in Pawleys creek this year…Hope to see you out there !
