Kayakers Beware!

My other business is Edisto Towing and I am also Edisto Sea Rescue. In the last week, I have had to rescue 5 people who tried to kayak to Otter Island. The currents are stronger than most people realize. Across the bar can get extemely rough, and the currents in the Edito River are nasty.

Unless you are very experienced, please don’t attempt this. I will come help you, but don’t put yourself in this situation.

Several years ago, I had to go rescue 16 people takaen by a state DNR person who made the same mistake. They don’t do it anymore.

Yea, I noticed that yesterday. I drop a few people off at the beach and anchored off in 3’. The water was up at the grass. By the time I caught up to my group, the water was about 50’ from the grass. Realizing the tide was dropping real fast, I ran back to the boat and I was in 1’. I’ve never seen it drop that fast before. That current is really moving even at the beach.

If you ain’t hooked, you ain’t doing it right.

Great advice, UD. Some folks just don’t realize, I guess, that there is a river that is flowing out to sea. Pair that with the normal strength of the tides flowing in and out, throw a good wind in there, and that’s not a good place to be in a kayak. It’s good to know that there is a reliable towing/rescue. Thanks for keeping that going.

These were not your usual tides this weekend. I’ve never had a problem putting my boat on a trailer before at Dawhoo but this Friday and Saturday the current was ripping through at the ramp. I’ll be glad when it gets back to normal river current and tides. I think we were seeing some effects of the huricane this weekend.

Thanks, Captain “Tugg”, for the report!!
