My crew has been kayaking baits from the surf for an annual cobia trip to Hatteras and have had some success with a couple nice fish. I’m normally on the rod (6’6 with a tld 20 loaded with 30 lb) and someone blasts through the crazy Hatteras surf and gets just past the 2nd bar (200-220 yards) to drop the payload. We’ve refined it to tying the bait on behind the kayaker with a loop of mono that he cuts when it’s time to drop and that has worked reasonably well so far. However, we are always looking for a safer and more efficient way to get 6 oz of bait and 12 oz to the target. Has anyone here ever experimented with any type of release clip or other methods? A drone would be cool, but probably not in the cards yet.
I used a longline clip tied the back of my kayak for a while, works pretty well
Thanks Fishguy. Was thinking a flatline/outrigger tension clip might be the way to go. Just will have to test it so it doesn’t pop off from surface tension when he’s halfway out.
put a cleat near the back of the kayak and make the leader loops big enough to slip over it. secures it great and easy to slip back over when ready to deploy.
I use a flush mount rod holder that I installed . Mine has a rubber stopper that goes in the top of the holder. I put my sinker and swivel inside the tube and then push the rubber stopper into it. Once I decide to drop the leader I pull the stopper and it releases the whole rig.
