Sunday we decided to take at trip down to Hunting Island for a beach day before my sister’s kids had to go back to school. For the heck of it brought along 1 light spinning rod, a pack of hooks and a couple 1 ounce leads. Picked up a pound on the fresh shrimp and off to the beach we go. I set up camp beside one of the groins where I could keep an eye on everyone and ended up having decent day. Caught 2 small pompano (a first for me), several whiting, 2 small reds and a black drum all caught in the suds less than 20 feet from my feet in only a couple hours time. Not bad for a thrown together last minute trip.
Sometimes simple is the best way to go. Sounds like a fun day. Pretty cool about the pompano, never caught one of those.
“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”, but really, who cares?
I drove down to meet friends of mine camping at Hunting Island and they had a Florida Pompano skeleton head and tail intact where the gill plate and tail were each a hand width on either side of a plate. I told them they probably just ate a state record fish. I was amazed they caught it in the surf. I spent some great weekends camping there. What a beautiful park.
