Keeping the Gray Matter Active

A good friend of mine sends several emails a year with some simple but thought provoking questions as a test to ensure you are keeping your mind working. Some of the questions are riddles, others are play on words, but most are simple questions that most usually over analyze and answer wrong. For instance how many cubic feet of dirt is in a 3 foot deep by 3 foot wide by 3 foot long hole. 9 cubic feet correct? Wrong, there is no dirt in a hole! For this weeks article I thought I would put together a few simple questions to test your boating knowledge. While I am sure my questions a will not be nearly as witty or perhaps as some may say tricky as the one before, hopefully they will at least be thought provoking…

  1. When heading south in the ICW what color should the channel markers be on your starboard side if you are operating in the channel?
  2. What does VHF stand for?
  3. What are the first 3 digits of the latitude and longitude of the Charleston Harbor entrance (Seaward end of the jetties)?
  4. What day shape will a dredge in operation display?
  5. What color is the bow light on the starboard side?
  6. What does 5-short blasts of a horn indicate?
  7. What does EPIRB stand for?
  8. What type of PFD are infants required to wear?
  9. By law if operating with ___-feet of another vessel or dock are you required to slow to an idle speed.
  10. Are red channel marker buoys numbered with even or odd numbers?

Here are the answers to testing your gray matter, I hope you did well!

  1. Red
  2. Very High Frequency
  3. Lat 324 Lon 794
  4. Ball diamond ball
  5. Green
  6. Danger, get out of the way
  7. Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon
  8. Type II as it has head support
  9. 50
  10. even
