Heading to Kiawah on Sunday for the week. I have little kids so I can’t explore too much but I’d love to throw a few lines out from the beach while they play. Any recommendations? We are staying on Atlantic Beach Court which is just east of the Sanctuary.
I have lots of luck fishing for Whiting on kiawah. I use the pre-rigged Pompano or Porgey Riggs with the red bead with a 1-3 ounce weight depending on conditions. I also find that braided line tends to set the hook on whiting better than mono, I’m not sure why but it just works. Also if you are targeting whiting I suggest small pieces of fresh shrimp with no shell. One last thing you don’t have to cast to England to catch them. Good luck and tell us how you do!
Was out there this weekend but didn’t get to fish…spoke to a nice guy that was out there fishing. Said they got a few small trout on mm’s but was overall slow. They were just north of the ocean course’s clubhouse where a pretty good sized inlet met the ocean. Good luck.

There’s no inlet or anything other than folders out there by the ocean course tennispro. Nothing but a nice flat quiet beach
thanks baitbucket - I appreciate the quick response. Can you find reds or flounder on the beach or do you need to go to an inlet or in the river?

bgfm03, From were you will be staying, I guess you will access the beach via the board walks, #29-#30 are close to Atlantic Beach court. There should be some decent ditchs and cuts in that area. Go down at low tide, find the holes, cast into them when they fill in. Looks like you will have afternoon low tides all week. Sun. 1:33pm, Wed. 3:33pm. Small hooks, fresh shrimp, tight lines. Good Luck!

Wrangler…unless I got my bearings mixed up…ocean course clubhouse on my left…about 2-300 yards up from there on the beach was a pretty deep cut/creek emptying into ocean…i couldn’t see bottom…and at least 30+ feet across at low tide.

Meant to say golfers not folders. No tennispro there is nothing out there just nice houses and golf carts. Nothing…

I have caught some nice flounder in the ditches at low tide.
So I have tried three times both in the surf and one of the ponds on Turle Creek Golf Course and have not even seen a bite yet. The guy at Frasers Tackle Shop recommended cut frozen mullet for both the beach and the pons, but I feel like I should be using something fresher. Any ideas? Shrimp / squid?
Always fresh over frozen. Most fish will take fresh shrimp. As PP mentioned - small pieces with the shell peeled off. I like using cut mullet - fresh better than frozen. This time of year I will buy a whole mullet from seafood market, and cut into strips for bait. Don’t know what size hooks you are using, but I would not go any larger than 1/0. I usually fish a double drop rig with either #2 or 1/0 circle hooks. Make sure barb and gap on the hook is not blocked or covered by the bait. 2 or 3oz pyramid weight on the bottom should be enough for the surf.
Where in the world is everybody finding fresh shrimp for bait? Or am I being naive and is everybody just buying fresh shrimp that is table quality and using it as bait?
Buying fresh shrimp from seafood market that is table quality and using it for bait is what I do. The reality is this time of year even some of the “fresh” shrimp sold in the seafood markets is previously frozen, and thawed just prior to being put on display. While a little more expensive I have better luck with this than the tubs of frozen shrimp sold at wal-mart and bait shops. I usually hit my local seafood market and buy 1/2lb of medium shrimp in the shell which costs about $3.00, and will be plenty to last me for a day in the surf. Commercial shrimping season will start in about a month or so. Once that opens I buy true fresh shrimp from the shrimpers on Shem Creek to use as bait. The local seafood markets will also have fresh local shrimp for sale once the commercial season opens.
Got it, thank you for the ■■■■■■■■. Just so everyone knows, the In-N-Out on Folly rd sells full frozen shrimp with the head on, best I’ve found so far. Have caught multiple reds on their bait and was also using it when i lost my first bull on Sunday.
Ditto on the market shrimp. I never use"bait" shrimp. And yes I have taken bait home and boiled 'em for cocktails. I have done the math, it is cheaper. 30 count shrimp will bait 70-80 hooks, for me.
