Kindle/eBook questions

I enjoy reading, specifically about fishing and adventures. Over the past few years, I’ve been doing a lot of traveling around the country and find that carrying a bunch of books is cumbersome and bulky when traveling so I’ve been looking into purchasing a Kindle or other e reader thing. I don’t own a tablet and would have no use for one other than reading so I’m not in pursuit of some fancy dancy doodad toy. All I want is something to stick in a backpack and read books from.

From those who use a Kindle, what model do you have and what model do you recommend? Is it worth the money for one with a large memory? Wi-fi? How many books can fit on yours? Can you transfer books from one to another? Any advice?

Hey Chris. My wife and I both read a lot and kindle works great for us. For no frills and good reading the Kindle Paperwhite is excellent. You need the wi-fi to download books. Not sure how many books it stores but a dang bunch of them! It will also store them in the kindle cloud if you don’t have memory for them all.

It shares your downloads between all of your devices. I can download a book from my phone and my wife can read it on her phone, the tablet, or the Kindle paperwhite. Or the computer. It’s cool because we can both read the same book at the same time and be in different places. Or you can sync them to each other where they will be on the same page.

No extra charge for all of that. We share books between the kindle paperwhite, 2 smart phones, a tablet and a desktop. If you don’t have enough memory on the device it will be stored in the Kindle Cloud.

Go with a Kindle. They have a real good deal right now. Can store more books than you can read in a year! Love mine.

I really like the looks of the Kindle Paperwhite. Can I share books with others or is that only something one of the expensive ones can do?

i have the kindle paperwhite and love it. i read it at work using the built in backlight, and the wife reads it on the boat or laying in the sun no problem. also have about 10,000 books on file. if you go kindle let me know and i will send you the books.

If you have a smart phone there are several E reader apps available. I use Nook books from Barnes and Noble and been very happy with it for the 3 years I’ve been using it. I’ve only looked for one book that wasn’t available through their service and it was fairly obscure. Its been my experience that any reading material available in a Barns and Noble store is also available in E reader form. I actually have 35 full length novels stored in my device right now and many more in my online library that are immediately available to download. You can adjust the size and style to any font u like, you can even adjust the line spacing and borders. It also has a night and day setting. I have no trouble reading in the sun. Why buy and carry another device when you already carry your phone. The app itself is free but of course you will have to purchase the books. I’ve also tried Play Books from Amazon, it works just as well and has all the same features but the books are significantly more expensive.

Kindle fire. I’m on the road traveling for work, and responding to this post with it. I read a lot also.

Kindle paperwhite sounds like what you need. You may be tempted to look at the kindle fire line (fairly close cost and more functionality), but the screen is not very good for outdoor use. I used to read on my smartphone with a kindle app as well, but battery drain and outdoor visibility is still an issue. Most all will have wifi capability for downloading books, and you can share across multiple devices with your Amazon account. Books are small size as well, so storage space is rarely an issue.

Another vote for the Paperwhite. Another advantage not mentioned yet is battery life. With a full charge, you can read books for a very long time. They advertise 8 weeks of continuous reading on a full charge, which seems hard to believe but even if it is half that it is very good.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

GF has a Paperwhite and loves it, I also suggest Calibre Software, works with any device, converts to whatever file type the device uses.

dont need wifi to read. i have a ton of books that i got for free, so download the ones she wants on the reader and good to go. i have 5 books on it now, and room for plenty more.

I happened to get a Paperwhite for my birthday, imagine that! Anyone have any good fishing related books they recommend or want to share?

I loved this book. Copied from Amazon: In Wild Men, Wild Alaska professional hunting and fishing guide and outfitter Rocky McElveen tells the stories of his own adventures as well as those of some of his well-known clients. The book takes readers directly into the Alaskan bush, and shares the intense challenges of a majestic wilderness that pushes a man to his limits.

I can’t recommend “The Dog Stars” by Peter Heller highly enough. Don’t think twice about it, just get it.

I see a bunch of “men” on here who need to get together on Sundays for “book club” meetings… Maybe next week, you guys can talk about 50 shades of grey…

I ain’t risking my man card by reading that, but guys let me tell ya, buy a copy for your wife :wink:

A little humor while we’re on that subject :smiley:

quote:

Me missus bought a paperback
Down town on Saturday,
I had a peep into her bag;

'Twas ?Fifty Shades of Grey."

Well I just left her to it,
And at ten I went to bed.
An hour later she appeared;
The sight filled me with dread.

Her left hand held a length of rope;
And in her right a whip!
She threw them down onto the floor,
And then began to strip.

Well fifty years or so ago
I might have had a peek;
But Doris hasn?t weathered well;
She?s eighty four next week.

Watching Doris bump and grind
Could not have been much grimmer.
Things then went from bad to worse;
She toppled off her Zimmer!

She struggled up upon her feet
A cuppla minutes later;
She put her teeth back in and said
That I must dominate her!!

Now if you knew our Doris,
You would see just why I spluttered,
I?d spent two months in traction
For the last complaint I?d uttered.

She stood there nude, just naked like,
Bent forward just a bit ?.
I took a pace to brace meself
And stood on her left tit!

Old Doris screamed, her teeth shot out;
My god what had I done?
She moaned and groaned then shouted out:
?Step on the other one!?

Well readers, I won’t tell no more
What happened on that day.
Suffice to say my jet black hair
Turned ?fifty shades of grey?.
