lagoon tarpon

caught a small tarpon in the lagoon near my parent’s house. he put up a good fight and jumped a dozen times. pretty big surprise after fishing there for four years. wonder how he got there and if he’ll get much bigger? two days later, my buddy caught a 40" spottail; the biggest one i’ve ever seen come out of there.

What did you catch him on?

Great job on both fish. Tarpon are plentiful in the lagoons, and enter during high tide as small fry. They do not get much bigger than the one you caught, and are ususally hard to catch. The redfish get huge in the lagoons if the water quality and oxygen are ample due to lots of bait. That goes for the trout and blue crab as well. I recently caught and released a 24" trout in an edisto beach lagoon on topwater. You might want to try it. Go to the hardware store, and ask John for best topwater baits…he knows

Great job!

Excuse my ignorance, but where are the “lagoons”? Are they accessible by boat?

They are in the middle of the beach between Palmetto Blvd. and Jungle Rd. Try any of the cross streets such as Portia St

usecd, both of the fish were caught on mudminnows under a float.

huffco, that’s a nice trout. i’ve caught a couple on a spook jr. is there something better i should try?

Any idea what that Spottail weighs?

Just trying to learn every bit I can about saltwater fishing…

just a guess…somewhere between 25 to 30 lbs.

not being a smart arse but why did you keep the little tarpon

Im no expert about Tarpon but they arent any good to eat are they?

i didn’t keep it. if you look closely you’ll see that the lagoon is all of 50 yards from the house. i caught it right there, ran up the steps for the pic, and threw him back in. there’s no way i’d eat that thing; it smelled like crap.

Is it OK to walk the banks on these lagoons. I don’t want anyone calling the law. I will be down in Sept. and would love to give them a try.
What about the ones back at Fairfield? I see folks fishing back there all the time.
Landlocked in the Upstate near Greenville!

I have spent most of my life fishing.
The rest has been wasted.

Good for you for putting him back, Gent.

Ftr, they do get a good deal bigger in those golf course ponds, esp. with the successive mild winters we’ve been having. I have seen several over 36"s and caught a couple 30"ers on topwater in the last 2 years. I thought it was a well kept secret but it now appears the cat is out of the bag…

i didn’t let any cats out. i never said i caught it on edisto beach…and i didn’t.

Could you have possibly cought him in a unnamed devolpment south of cowpins. the lagoon in the pic deffintly didnt look like fairfield or the ones that are around the 700 block

yep, that’d be the one.

glad to hear that you did let it go

you know there are people that would keep it throw it in the back of the truck to show everybody and then throw it in the dumpster

It all depends on water clarity. Muddy water I use popping plugs (noisy). Clear water Sppoks are good…keep’em moving. With clear water, the fish can tell its a plug. use lots of action. Early morning is by far the best, but i caught a couple of 16 inchers this weekend at night…but also lost 2 plugs to bad casts cuz i couldn;t see well
