Lake Murray Striper Guide, sort of...

I’m just curious if there are any experienced striper fishermen/fisherwomen who might be interested in showing my father and I the ropes of striper fishing on lake murray.

We would be fishing in a 2002 23’ Key West CC and will provide the boat/gas/bait/beer. Neither of us have ever done any striper fishing and would love to learn as this weather is starting to change.

We live in Irmo and usually launch out of Pine Island or at the Dam.

If interested, shoot me an e-mail StevenKranendonk@gmail.com

You picked a bad time of year to start. The lake just turned over and the fish are kind of in shock. It should get better in a few weeks.

But it was the right time of year to buy a boat. Got a great deal on a nice boat with a killer setup. :sunglasses:

how do you like that boat??? what price range???

I love to striper fish…and this is my first year at Lake Murry…it’s a great place to fish…have had some really good luck before the turn over…

they have a great striper club there also…

Hey Steve, Glad to see you on the site. I met you at work, if you remember (RB entry). I’m about to hit the road again to Harris and Crystal river. I’ll miss out on all the good fishing this fall. Stay on this site and read the threads, you’ll catch on, its not too hard. Look at the past threads. They are very informative. I think the Oxygen levels are screwed up in the lake right now and a waste of time to go. Maybe in a couple of weeks the fish will be happy. Stay tuned.

Have to agree with Steely, nothing out there right now but disapointment and heartache. I’m sure lots of guys wouldn’t mind taking you out to “show you the ropes” but I know I would feel bad if you got skunked on my watch. We’ve started framing our house here on the lake so I will not have much water time in the near future but I will be happy to answer any question you may have—to the best of my limited ability. Welcome to the wonderful world of Lake Murray striper fishing!:sunglasses:

That’s the boat, check it out. It rides great and hops right up on plane no problem, even with 6 people in the boat.

Any information on the Striper Club?

My parents are out in the boat right this minute fishing for stripers.

Are there any bait shops on the water that carry live shad or herring? It’s just a lot easier putting them in your livewell when you are already on the water.

If no bait shops on the water, where else can you buy shad or herring from other than Lake World? We normally put in at Pine Island (coming from Irmo) and would rather not back track from Lake World.

Thanks yall!

www.midlandsstriperclubhomestead.com. i don’t know of any bait stores other than lake world or better bait.

Thanks for the link.

Where is Better Bait? How long have they been around? Never heard of it.

better bait is past lake world on the right, behind the gas station.they have been there 6 years or better.

Steve,

The website to the club is http://midlandsstriperclub.homestead.com/</font id=“blue”>
There is a good bit of information there on the site and you can also check out the club at our next meeting on next Tuesday at 7pm at the Carolina Wings restaurant on Highway 1. We meet every second Tuesday there at 7pm. I have nissed the last couple but will hopefully be there next week to catch the update on the lake study for renewing the licensing for SCE&G at the lake. Our guest speakers are usually talking on equipment and techniques. Swing by and they are always great people willing to share with info with you. On the website, you can also post this same message on the forum and I know somebody will be willing to take you out or tagalong and show you the ropes. I am still learning from them myself.

i think you can get bait on the water at big birds landing near the state park. not sure, i’ve never seen any reason to go anywhere besides better bait or lake world (if BB is closed).

SteveKran- You can also get herring on the water at Dreher Island State Park landing in Crystal Lake. George has a boat there most mornings until around 6:30-7:00. Just pull up beside him and he will fill your well up with chemical water and herring for $6 a dozen.

I’ve read a good bit on the site and looked over the forum. I’m positive I’d like to join but I can’t make that meeting due to a previous engagement. Do I have to wait until next month to join, or can I drop the form/money off somewhere?

That information about the lake would be very interesting to me. I work for SCE&G and have pretty much grown up on the lake and at Pine Island.

Steve,

You do not have to join the club on your first visit. Feel free to drop in whenever you can. The yearly membership is only $30 and after July 1st it is only $15 for the rest of the year. You can join at the meeting, or you can drop the application in the mail. the application is on the website I do believe. I joined about a year and a half ago. Like I said in earlier post, lots of great people with great knowledge. Many of our members have fished the lake forever it would seem and some are even guides on it. Lots of knowledge can be acquired via these guys. I have fished a couple of the tournaments, but I mainly joined for the knowledge of this specific fish. I grew up here catching largemouth and crappie with no problem, but the striper seems to be a whole different story at times. Lots to still be learned. Feel free to shoot me an email with any specific questions or inquiries at williams@gw.mp.sc.edu

Steve: I just started fishing Lake Murry this year. My experience has always been in the lower lakes of Marion and Moultrie…which is a different ballgame–compared to Lake Murry. The Murry Striper Club has helped me greatly and I would advise it to any new comer to the lake area. The forum is open for questions…and someone always gives an answer. The knowledge this club gives is unreal…

If I can help you … hollar......santeecarl@yahoo.com

Nice Boat!

Thanks! Not bad for a first boat. Just big enough for some offshore fishing, but not too big for Lake Murray. And we’ve got E-Sea Rider BEAN BAGS!!!

I did see some folks just tearing em up at the towers two nights ago. Live herring, about 30 feet, late afternoon about 6pm. They had four rods out and two were going off almost continuously. Mostly 20 inchers. It seems a shame, but there are countless dead striper floating around the big end of the lake.
Anyone know if that is due to being pulled up from the depths, or is something like a natural phenomenon going on?
