Spent last week with the family enjoying some R&R on Edisto. Pretty sure somebody ended up with a fishing rod in hand every day - which is about as good a way to spend vacation as I know of.
Weather and sea conditions were good nearly all week which seems to never happen when I’m on vacation, so we took advantage of the good fortune to make it off the beach several times.
Met Captain Buddy as we were launching the boat the first morning out. What a friendly guy. Enjoyed chatting with him for a few minutes and then rolled on out the North Edisto to be greeted by several schools of spanish. We picked up enough for dinner and left them biting in hopes of something bigger on 4KI. The spades were up on the surface when we got there so they kept our attention despite being finicky about taking a piece of shrimp or squid (didn’t see a jellyball all week).
To kick the arm stretching up a notch I dropped a sabiki rig over the side and jigged up some bait. It wasn’t too long before the cigar minnow freelined out the back drew some attention and my 11 y/o was in the battle royale with a good size barracuda
A couple of those after a few spades on light tackle and he was done, at least for a little while.
The good thing about tired boys is they sleep hard and are ready to go again. The next time out the spanish weren’t waiting on us so we didn’t spend much time looking and just headed on out. Mid morning we both had just hooked up with good bites on the bottom when the freelined pinfish started exiting stage right at a high rate of speed. We had a fire drill for a minute or so while landing the bottom fish and getting him on the rod with his first king mackerel. Mercury poisoning or not, he was adamant he wanted to take that one to the hill!
