Late Fall/Winter Surf Fishing

I am curious if there are decent fishing opportunities from the beaches or piers around Charleston after the run of bull reds. I have had great luck fishing this year and I am hoping there will be gamefish to target during the late fall and winter. Maybe flounder, sheepshead, or trout? I am still trying to figure out the movement of different fish species as the seasons change.

Actually, the “Bull Red Run” has not quite geared up yet. The Black Drum seem to be coming back, Specks will start to show up soon as the surf temp drops some more. This is by far my favorite time of year to be in the surf. The big Reds will be around into Feb. I’ve caught nice 30"+ Reds in Jan. & Feb. (from the surf). I don’t target flounder, so couldn’t comment. Oh yeah, if you’re gonna surf fish in Jan, Feb. better get some wadders, the water gets pretty chilly. And I do surf fish ALL year.

Here is a nice one from this past Feb. note the long sleeves with shirt under and yes, chest wadders.

Thanks! I was wondering how long the bull red run lasts. Can’t wait to get out to folly one of these weekends

Thanks for that info DP. I have fished the surf up through about Thanksgiving and had my best days with the big reds in November. I had no idea you could catch them in the winter. Glad I still have my waders.

March thru early April are pretty slow, water is very cold then. But I still go out on the nice days. Seem like the rays will bite anytime.
