late folly report from 6/19

fished the south… err i mean east end of folly with my wife and neighbor and had a fun day. lots of small whiting for me mainly. wife caught a 5 pound or so stingray and a nice 20" ladyfish

hooked into 2 monsters which i never saw or could turn with my ultralight gear. i usually target whiting with 10 - 12 pound test and small pieces of fresh shrimp. hooked one that striaght up smoked my line out and broke me off… oh yeah took all my line too [:0]

fun day with steady action and some cold yeunglings in the cooler. fished around low. variety of bottom rigs with cut shrimp

How much line did you have on your reel? I use light gear with 250 yards of 10 lb. test braid. If you had that much I better beef my gear up.

hmmm bonnethead or bull red maybe? also what do you mean by ultralight? for my lighter rod ill usually use a 7 foot graphite rod i had for walleye back home with about 200 yards of 15lb line and have landed several redfish over the slot up to 30" with it no problem and actually 10x more fun on light tackle. i know someones gonna yell at me for this but ive also used a 5’ 6" crappie rod in the surf for whiting with shrimp and about 100 yards of 10lb line and the biggest its landed is a 24" red and some stingrays, but it would be pretty iffy if it would hold up to a big bonnethead, bull red, or even sharpnose before getting spooled. if your reel was smoking probably wasnt a stingray…but is ultralight crappie rod light and bonnethead or maybe even a big red a good guess?

yeah the reel i got spun on is a little shimano on a light action 6’ rod that i bought probably 5 years ago and has been beat to hell. not a stout setup at all (probably not the ideal surf setup ). i love light tackle and for the fish i normally catch (whiting, trout, pompano) it’s fantastic fun.

i honestly didn’t have enough line on it this day as i was lazy about changing it but whatever it was smoking the line off. i wasn’t cathin that thing even if i did have enough line. haha it was hilarious though. entertaining for sure :stuck_out_tongue:

popped another off on my other setup that can handle bigger fish normally. really can’t wait to go out there one evneing and try again

oh yeah should mention my wife caught a good sized ray with that little pole earlier that day. man i have a great wife
