Lesson Learned

Moved to Bluffton area 2 years ago this October from Columbia. I kayak fish the area and have gained knowledge every trip! I believe you have to work and earn your spots and good days. Soo fishing has been good for me. Today caught some sheepies and reds then-----I fought a stingray off the bottom, a little guy, followed my s.o.p. To release him and BAM nailed me on my ring finger–I love the low country but not this part. Soo from now on .75 hook not worth 100%pain! I will cut the line from now on!!!

Been there done that on the stingray.

Got whacked by one in the fatty part in palm and decided to tuff it out and keep fishing. Pain kept moving up arm all the way to shoulder. Buddy on boat made a call about what happened and said to get it in hot water. Got to house, put hand under faucet with as hot as I could stand and gone. Neighbor had a sand bag thingy that you could heat in microwave that I put on hand as standing at sink sucked. After an hour or so, no more pain after removing from heat.

Those little ones are the most likely to get you, and they hurt like Hedoublel. Like a snake bite! Ya got to pay your dues to the fish Gods sometimes though. We hurt them too. I usually give them the hook unless they make it easy. It doesn’t take many times of that happening to make you real careful!

You got that right brother!!!

Southern Ride, that’s a bummer but glad you are getting dialed in on the fishing. I have a question or 10 about your move to Bluffton. Sending you a PM.

I have some foot long needle nose pliers. I grab the hook as close as possible to the barb, hang the ray over the side, turn the hook pointy end down, and shake hard. It that doesn’t work I drape the line over the gunnell, pull the ray up the side and cut the line as close to the hook as possible. I don’t feel good about leaving the hook in a ray, but that’s better than getting his “hook” in me!
