Lion fish hunting

We will be going out this week diving and going after some lions after a long break from this site almost 4 years it’s time to start posting again . Will post pics when we get back.

Do you just kill the sorry little rascles or do you eat them as well? Hope you get a lot and no one gets stung!

Kill em all. God speed sir.

Hope you kill a lot.We had 3500+ pounds last year.As many in the last couple of years. They are everywhere offshore.

No real predators and they eat everything…kill them all. Too bad the dog fish don’t eat them…

Lionfish are absolutely delicious! Sweet and mild white meat.

Yes we eat them and are fantastic . Looks like we are getting nasty blow this weekend so we are calling of charter . That’s charleston weather for you .

Welcome back Go Fish.

In the bottom fishing I have done, I have not caught more than a couple of Lion fish. Do any of you catch them regularly, and how?

100’ or deeper. On almost every dive I’ve done for the last 10 years or so that deep or deeper. We took 300lbs off one wreck 3 years ago.

I don’t doubt they are there, but how do you catch them on hook and line? I don’t dive any more.
And while I’m at it , how should they be dressed (carefully) and cooked. I’m assuming only the spines are dangerous. Right?

This is only way I know how to take them

Yes the spines are what get you , and trust me I’ve been hit one time at hundred feet down and will put a grown man to his knees . Pain is hard to describe but last for hrs on end .

We catch them on almost every bottom fishing trip now. After getting stung last year I will never mess with one ever again. Much worse than a stingray or a Portuguese man-of-war. Pain lasted for days

Hot water is how to get rid of the pain.Get it as hot as you can stand and use a rag to keep the area hot.Don’t pour hot water or soak if you can help it.It hurts so bad at times you may scald your skin and not notice til too late.
Before there were all the containment devices we did this

Had 2 lion fish stings cross our desk this year, one behind a guys ear! Applying heat was recommended on both cases. It breaks down the venom. The screaming over the VHF radio is pretty memorable.

Yep I remember toting everything on a fish ring and teasing sharks to come get it on are safety stops . I’ve even seen them get it a few times from divers in florida and drag diver around . It was funny after finding out diver was ok . But the diver dragged around got a life lessons send fish up on lift bag for chase boat to pick up.

Go-Fish,I’m 65 years old, born and raised in the Fla Keys were kids were brought up diving like kids up here are raised up with a shotgun and Deer Dogs. I have broken a lot of bones, cut myself to the bone filleting fish and skinning Deer, even rolled an 18 wheeler over loaded with logs, lucky to survive, but have never felt the pain I had from this dive. In Sept,I was backing out of a hole after catching a Lobster in 100’ and got hit by a Lion Fish in the calf. I screamed underwater thinking I had gotten bit by an eel! Lots of them down there and you have to be careful reaching for Slippers and Bugs! I turned around to find a Lion fish lurking about were my legs were. My partner (Realfish01)Assisted me to the surface as I was in unbelievable pain!My crew used my Lunch oven to heat rags soaked in water to apply heat to the 4 puncture wounds in my leg. After an hr of crying and whining like a little girl we headed for the hill as my crew was not sure if I would survive! That was the longest 6hrs of my life before the pain started to ease. I’ve eaten them and they are excellent, but I will never intentionally mess with a Lion fish again. I’m pretty tough and that brought me to my knees!I still have knots under my skin were i got hit, three months latter! Family saying, if you going to be dumb, you better be tough!

If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.

So Sellsfish and Bug Catcher, two seasoned professionals, say they will never go near a lion fish again. Might be a pro tip there. Even with the utmost caution you will probably get popped eventually if you target them. But somebody has to do it. Be careful or man up when they get you.
