Lionfish in Beaufort

This isn’t a fishing report per se, but I was in Beaufort today and stopped at the Sea Eagle fish market to buy some grouper. They had about a dozen or more lion fish laid out on the ice. These guys were about 12-14 inches long and had all of their spines intact. I commented to the guy behind the counter that the spines of that fish were venomous. He said"I doan know nuttin about dat, I just cleans 'um". I told him to be very careful handling those fish. I was tempted to buy some, but decided not to.

Very surprised to hear that. They don’t charge extra to clean em, so tell the guy to fillet it for you.

I have heard they are excellent eating and if we ever pull one up, I would keep it and EAT it.

If you or anyone happens to catch one, kill it even if you don’t want it. They are not native fish and are harmful to our fishery.

By the way, we stopped by Gilligans for lunch one time and they have them in their tanks. I mentioned to the waitress about those spines/fins cause alot of pain if they getcha…she replied that the manager was feeding them and got stuck by one…said he was hurting BIGTIME! Wish there was a vid of that!

Oyster. I’m a chef in charleston. I’ve been serving lions for a few years. Matter of fact a group on here came in and I served them some. Anyway I’m curious where they got them from?? The only boat I know that catchs them came in I just got 90lbs in today, and this was a bad trip. He’s a commercial diver and he only came back with a total of 500lbs. His new crew sucks. He’s leaving them home. Lol
But I bet those came off the Ga commercial dive boat. As I’m not aware if a comm dive boat in Beaufort, Paul G would know.
What was the price and assuming they are whole gutted??

Chef, I didn’t ask about the price or their origin . They looked fresh to me. Here’s a link for you http://seaeaglemarket.com

I just spoke with them and they are $8.99lb whole. Said some local was getting them.
