Cedar plug. That’s my guess.
Seriously, I doubt they’re gonna tell you where they were or what they were using.
Awesome fish fellas…and way over 60 lbs.

I’ll give yall a hint
sweet! You have one hell of a crew bob. Good job all of ya.
They will not tell us where they caught them but the commerical fishermen will know since they have been catching them on 200’ reefs off of the keys on full moon nights using live lobster as bait. 50 pounders are not uncommon. 118 is a big boy. they just have not been banged on up here, but with these pictures, the snapper boats will be targeting them until they are wipped out. there must be some big darn lobster down there they are feeding on, but it would take mixed gas to get to them.
my guess the 30 fathom ledge. 180-300’

That’s EXACTLY what I’ve been thinking since I heard the news. I haven’t heard any apologies to Phin though…but I think theres a lot of people pulling their feet out of their mouths right now.

Nah, they weren’t talking about you Bob.
To be sure though, I am not worried about anything anybody was saying to me about me or the Avets. I did get carried away sometimes by talking down about other reels when I was saying how good Avets were. I think everybody had an idea that Avets were great reels, but a few didn’t like somebody pushing them the way I was in a few threads. You don’t have to have one, but I’m sure Bob, PQ, or Schools will tell you they are on a whole different level! I did not catch the fish, but when he says that the thing was pulling line from the reel when it was locked down at 50+ lbs, that tells you right there that many other reels would not have been able to do it, period.
No matter what reel was used, a near world record and state record crusher like Bob’s is a result of a lot of planning and skill. I am proud to have met him and a few of his crew over the last few weeks; they know what they are doing and love it so 2 record snapper are well deserved and I doubt they’ll be the last records broken by 'em.

Well, I guess ya’ll were referring to me. And, no I don’t have my foot in my mouth. I have posted before that I like Avet reels. I haven’t used them as much as some, but they seem like a nice product for a good price. I just thought it was a little bit messed up when someone who was not authorized to sell Avets used these boards to drum up sales. That just seemed a little bit unscrupulous to me. This catch is pretty impressive and clearly says alot about the 4/0 size reel used to catch it, regardless of where they came from.
Serious question here: is this fish eligible for a state record? I’m not trying to detract from this very impressive catch, but I know that IGFA rules require that the rod be removed from the holder to fight the fish. I have no idea whether this was the case here or not, but judging from the tackle used, my guess would be that the fish was fought with the rod in the holder (I could be wrong - I just don’t know). I also don’t know whether the rules for SC records require that IGFA rules be followed.

actually the hardest part was getting the rod out of the holder, this is were the extra smooth drag gave us a chance,as we slowly released the tension and got me strapped in to the harness…

I’m not talking about you, as a matter of fact you got reels from Phin just like I did,
I was refering to that big debate about Phin selling stuff on the forum, that got other members upset, and they started *****in and refering him as spam,
I think Phin was trying to help, I’m sure he did not make any money out of the deal, he migth even loose some, by financing and getting a better price out of a volume purchase
anyway, good job Bob, I truly mean it, you got a state record and almost broke the world record, that something else, if I were you I will get that big cubera mounted on the wall at home:smiley:, I bet it will be a good way to start a conversation with friends for many, many years…
I hope one day I will break some sort of record, until then I will keep trying,
Fernando
Goat, you never seen a standup harness made for a bent butt aparently… Bent butts are igfa legal.
And he caught it on the narrow two speed 50 Avet w/ topless frame (a.k.a. san diego special). The new Pro 30 (4/0 sized Avet) probably would have been capable with almost as much drag, but the EXW4/02’s have considerably less and this big boy would have laughed at 35-38# max drag that the 4/02’s have. The 50’s have over 55#'s at full power. Anybody who has faught fish w/ spectra should be able to imagine what this fish felt like on the end of no-stretch line using that much drag!

Cool, catching that fish on standup is even that much more impressive! Nice catch - I’ve seen some cuberas off our coast, but nothing anywhere near the size of this fish!!!

Ah Bob you are too modest. Declare your strength over the cubera proudly.
You are at the top of the food chain and they now know this.

Guys, Bob had a helluva catch… he is a great guy and so are the guys that were with them…most them I consider my friends… but don’t come on here trying to make it like the Avets caught the ■■■■ fish… it was about the angler, the numbers, the leaders, the bait, and good fortune… I never said that AVETS were bad…ever… I have no issues with Phin and I hope he feels the same way…
Those cats fish hard and I am very happy for them…seriously, they fish harder than 99% of the rec guys in this area…they earned this catch…the AVET reel just happened to be there and did what it was supposed to do…
Let’s Go Crazy!!!
seriously…
Personally, I think it was the boat that landed the fish and not the Avet. It’s still funny Cracker.

MOUNT PLEASANT - Bob Williams is not a fisherman who wants to ruminate on the one that got away - he wants to know what he’s hooked.
That’s why he kept fighting, easing up on the drag, taking line back as he could, when everyone said he had just snagged a shark.
It was 3:30 a.m. Sunday, pitch black and about 70 miles off Charleston, when the Greenville sport fisherman hooked what he figured was some billfish. What else would run like that, then turn around and charge the boat?
But when it got close enough to gaff nearly 30 minutes later, what came out of the water was a monster - a big, dark-brown prehistoric sea beastie with jaws full of teeth like a dog’s. “And he was coming into the boat mouth-first,” Williams said.
That’s about the time someone said: “You’re gonna need a big ice chest.”
Williams hauled in a 118-pound cubera snapper, a fish big enough to eat lobsters whole, and without those cracking tools. The fish is not only a state record, it’s 3.5 pounds off the world record. Cubera snappers are rare here, preferring the salsa beat of the Florida Straits between the Keys and Cuba. The Florida record is 116 pounds.
But this guy will not be coming to a seafood restaurant near you any time soon. After cubera snappers get over 40 pounds, they develop toxins making them unsafe to eat. Williams is planning to donate the fish to the Department of Natural Resources for study.
Of course, no big catch comes without a fish tale. Four hours before Williams hauled in this dinosaur, his buddy, Josh Dickerson of Charleston, landed a 51-pound cubera snapper, more than good enough for the state record.
When Williams shattered that short-lived state record a few hours later, Dickerson was the easiest guy on the boat to pick out. While everyone else was cheering, Dickerson was cussing. “I’m just glad it was him and not someone else,” Dickerson said.
