Lone Ranger's record 118 pound cubera snapper

Anybody that thinks Phin is owed an apology because of this fish is retarded and needs to be neutered.

This was an awesome catch by a handful of crazy bastards that put in more time and effort than probably 99% of the rest of the rec. fleet.

All day Saturday, while I was drinking beer on Morris Island, I thought they were crazy for going. Turns out they had the right idea.

Way to go Bob and crew.

Yeah it’s all about being in the right spot…right Bob?

Guys, Bob had a helluva catch… he is a great guy and so are the guys that were with them…most them I consider my friends… but don’t come on here trying to make it like the Avets caught the ■■■■ fish… it was about the angler, the numbers, the leaders, the bait, and good fortune… I never said that AVETS were bad…ever… I have no issues with Phin and I hope he feels the same way…

Those cats fish hard and I am very happy for them…seriously, they fish harder than 99% of the rec guys in this area…they earned this catch…the fu cking AVET reel just happened to be there and did what it was supposed to do…

Let’s Go Crazy!!!

seriously…

Well said.

no, it was the reels. They put in all that time going fishing for all those years and then after maybe two trips with the Avets, not one but two monsters are landed. How many monsters were lost with the other rigs?

I’m going to get some Avets tomorrow and break some more records. Can anyone tell me how to get out of Charleston Harbor?

There was a letter sent in to sf or sws a few years ago regarding cuberas, the guy said he was a comm fish who was currently in the fed pen for catching square groupers and was responding to an article which stated that cuberas were rare north of fl. If I remember right he said that they used to catch a lot of big cuberas on the rocky ledges of the gth, they even refered to it as cubera ledge or cubera hole or something.

There are lots of interesting things out there we haven’t seen or done yet, that is what keeps me going out. New techniques to try and new fish to catch keeps me up at night.

And btw, that is one hell of a fish.

yes sir and thank you for your assistance,i hope one day i can return the favor…i will make you a promise right now i will not anchor up on that spot ever again…those were your numbers and you let us have them for the evening…thank you…

oh yeah don’t forget about the anchor and chain i left behind…its probably mangled real good.but i wouldn’t mind getting it back…we did a pretty good u-turn on one run with the anchor ball…

Bob you are way too modest. You done good man. I am proud of you guys, seriously. I hope we meet up again in the big blue ocean at night.

And I’ll try and find that anchor. It shouldn’t be too hard. That water is abolutely crystal clear. But I wont’ go there at night with those monsters around.

I know the article says they are toxic but would’nt that apply more in Fla??? Where there is more coral??

cig. is more common the older the fish I think. That being said, this 118 pounder would be a prime candidate. I’d like to know how old the DNR says it is after they look at the ear bones or whatever to date him.

Sorry Bob, but I had to let everybody see what you have done…

Fish is 118# caught last night. Post Quartermaster also got a 51# cubera earlier in the night, and this would have been a new record also!!!

Do what? I posted mostly because I had the pix and knew how to post them on here to save Bob the trouble.
That and the fact that it is an awesome catch that will push many of us to increase our carbon footprints and spend many more hours tinkering with boats and tackle and driving around on the ocean.

We caught a cubera trolling many years ago down in Pinas Bay Panama. Scared the crap out of me when they hauled it over the transom. I never saw a fish before with fangs. This was in the morning around 8 am and we were fishing on top of a mountain. I guess the water was 200 - 400 feet. He was 30-50 and the chef cooked him up for dinner and he was great. I am still alive. LOL

I cannot find that picture but here is another pick from that trip 2 days fishing 5 black marlin and 15 sail fish.

My mother got a 50 pounder in the bahamas in the 1960’s

Congrats on a great catch. I would have never believed we had them here…go figure.

Now that’s what I’m talking about!!! Enjoy:sunglasses:

“World Class” Fish there guys…

Good Work!

:sunglasses:Beautiful pair of fish guys. Heard about em all the way over in Missouri. Makes me homesick. There are some awesome fish on the offshore breaks off Charleston. Most fishermen don’t realize that in addition to the Cuberas that there are big Hogfish, African Pompano, Genuine American Reds and Speckled Hind (I even know a couple of spots where you can catch flag Yellowtail Snapper) out there and that they will hit deeply trolled baits or jigs from anchor ESPECIALLY at night. I remember late one afternoon pulling up on a spot blowing the horn and dropping everyone down and before the anchor could hit bottom about 20 anglers hooked up on 10-15lb Reds some of them with 2 at a time. Keep your numbers to yourself and never, ever, ever tell a soul though, cause one of my mates gave those snapper numbers to a commercial boat and in two trips they cleaned em out.:imp: Congrats on a catch to be proud of. capnkev</font id=“Comic Sans MS”>

lately, it occurs to me what a long strange trip it’s been. k(;

Got my books right here in my desk drawer though and that is where they are gonna stay til I get back to the coast. Nice try though.:slightly_smiling_face: Like Capn Randy Scott use to say “they’re everywhere, they’re everywhere…go find em”. y’all save me some buffalo. capnkev(;</font id=“Comic Sans MS”>
