Looking at New Surf Reel

Narrowed it down to the new Penn Spinfisher SSV Series. Would the 6500 be the right size or should I go up to a 7500 or another size, im thinking 15 or 20 mono or 30 or 40 braid. I do not really target sharks but wouldnt mind catching one here or there. Just after general surf fish.

I have the 6500 and i spooled it with 50 lb mono and i have enough line to horse in any shark i will catch off the beaches, i also use that reel on a jigging rod and it is awesome for the amberjack.

Good reel, go with 40 braid IMO

6500 is plenty for blacktips and other surf sharks and is overkill for even the biggest bull reds come fall.

If you are not targeting sharks, even a 6500 could be overkill. I use a 4000 series reel for everything from whiting to 5 foot blacktips. Now a 5 foot blacktip is quite the battle on a 4000 series reel but very doable. I use 4 spinning reels surf fishing now. A 2500 series for bait (pretty fun when a ray or big red takes the bait), a 4000 series reel (all around reel, bait and big fish), and 2 8000 series reels (I only bring them out for targeting sharks and rays, 80 lb test is overkill for a whiting).

Overall, it all depends on what you are targeting. From the info you gave, I would go with the 6500 series, plenty of reel for the big ones however you can still get the small ones.

Can anyone tell me about a Penn 750SS. I bought it a long time ago thinking to do some surf fishing but only used it once. Would like to start again but not sure of the equipment. I also bought a 10’ Penn rod and the reel sits about 2’ from the end. Appreciate any info. Thanks. FishTaker

I was not gonna comment, but since you called me out :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve had several Penn reels over the years (don’t have any now), I just got rid of a vv5500, it worked okay I guess. I find the drag system is weak for the reel size and fine adjustments are tough. But the Spinfisher V series, for the money, is the better choice, my opinion. The 5500/6500 are good overall sizes, But of course I am very biased towards my Zebcos.

Happy reel shopping and keep us posted.

You will be impressed with the new spinfishers right out of the box. Solid feeling reel an the drag is more than enough for the application. You only need 10-15 lbs at the most if using 50 lb braid. If you go with the 20-25 lb mono, you can get away with 6-8 lbs of drag. I’m a big fan. The only complaint I can see if te weight but if you’re surf fishing with it, don’t worry about it. A few ounces is not a big deal…

I had the 6500 before I upgraded to the 8500LL, and the 6500 is an awesome reel. More than enough for what you want it for. I’ve hauled in 60+ lb rays in shem creek with that 6500.

I think the 6500 is great for what you are looking for as well. Unless your targeting sharks all the time, anything above that isnt needed. You could even go down to the 5500 without a problem, but the 6500 is probably what I would buy as well. I think with the new Spinfishers being seeled, its the best reel on the market for surf fishing.

Ok, looks the the Penn Spinfisher 6500 will be an excellent choice. Thanks dparker, inshoreangler, and the others who responded.

I have a brand new, never spooled 6500 im trying to sell if your interested. shoot me a text, id be happy to let it go for 110$.

I Googled the Penn 750 SS is the parent of the new Penn Spinfisher. I bought this one in 1988-89 and only used it once. It’s like a brand new one. I saw a YouTube on the nomenclature and lubrication of the Penn 750 SS. All the internals are steel and brass. The drag limit is about 11#. Thank you for all this great information.

Ordered one yesterday off EBay for $125, wish I had seen this before.

I would go with an Akios Scora 80 or the Akios Cresta 90. casts like a champ and has good drag system.
