Looks like we dodged...

another winter bullet. Returning redfish fry as well as trout populations should be faring particularly well due to water temps. not dropping below 50 degrees in most areas this winter. Air temps. will be on the rise (on average) for Feb. and March, so winter distress excuses cannot be accepted for this year’s (and last year’s) class. I don’t know if everyone is experiencing the same, but there seems to be an abundance of 16-19 inch reds coupled with lots of BIG reds (over 27") this year on the flats in this area. This seems to be a direct reflection of weak year classes of 09/10 & 10/11 due to drastic low temps. recorded during these winters.

Trout fishing this fall should be off the chain!

RADDADDY, I sure hope we don’t experiece any crazy drops in temperatures between now and Spring/Summer

experience noun \ik-#712;spir–#601;n(t)s

  1. the fact or state of having been affected by or gained knowledge through direct observation or participation

  2. that thing you get just moments after you needed it.

Leaves are already poping out on the trees and the candles are in the pines. Everything will be covered in yellow dust shortly!

I can agree upon the abundance of 17-19" reds with another distinct group above 27". There have been some 22-25" fish, but almost none in the 20-22" range.

If I get some extra time I was thinking of dropping my tagging data into a statistical program and looking at the distribution of size and other things that will remain private. I have about 80 data points since the end of October.

Agreed RD should be good for fish populations. Was looking at reports from last March last night. Saltfisher actually caught a bonnet head shark in March and the trout and redfish action was strong.

The first bonnet we got was on Mar 14 last year, then got them from then on until Oct.I had never landed one in Mar before it had always had been in April. We were fishing live shrimp for trout and got bonnets.

In Charleston, there seemed to be a group of ~20" trout that are probably a year-class from the spring of 2011 maybe? I’m really looking forward to the coming year and catching (hopefully) some 3+ lb trout!

I don’t know about global warming for sure but if it means mild winters, early springs, and repeated healthy populations of fish I’m all for it ( except the increased number/strength of hurricanes ).

I wouldn’t say we dodged anything yet. Natural mortality caused from cold winters, parasites etc. is one thing. Fishing mortality, caused by us fishermen, is another. Trout typically stay in the estuary/river where they were born. Trout in the Wando ain’t moving to the Cooper. As far as trout are concerned, an increase in fishing pressure can result in a decrease in abundance. Not saying don’t fish for em’, just use good catch and release practices for those fish that are going back.

I was strictly referring to the weather and winter water temperatures. All I know is from my personal experience of TOUGH trout fishing after brutal winters as mentioned in the initial post. If limits need to be changed due to fishing pressure, then legislation needs to take care of existing populations. I’m curious, which areas are experiencing a dramatic increase in fishing pressure.

Charleston, for one.

Yankees lining the banks like they never caught a fush before, they are everywhere. Opps, thats right most of yall are too., Just use good sense and do not fish the same spot everyday, My lord the yaks are making it way to easy to get there and I see the same guys in the same spots everyday of the weekend during the summer, mix it up a bit.

Local Boy, Just having fun.

I’ve said this before and a fight ensued, but I don’t care I’ll say it again: Only keep what you are gonna eat for dinner without freezing. Forget the legal “limit”. Trout doesn’t freeze well anyway. And, consider releasing the big girls. Any trout over 20" will swim on my boat. Wish the legal limits would reflect this as well, IMO. Also, wet your hands before handling trout and use a rubber net to help the ones you release survive.

hmm, “Yankee” is spelled correctly, but not “y’all”… and kayaks are the biggest problem with overfishing? seems like it takes lots of different kinds of “good sense” to make the world go 'round.

dramatic increase in fishing pressure? i’d say edisto (esp north), hamlin/gray bay, and maybe the cape.

90% of the reds i’ve seen this year have been under 17" or over 24"… seem to be plenty of 1.5yr trout where i fish too (when the water has been above 55), haven’t seen a 22"+ since last spring though. opti and rad could teach me a few things, i’m sure!

I hope you do start a big fight. Let’s get him

i’ve got your back on that one, opti- frozen trout sucks.

Including me in this sentence is an insult to RAD! I aspire to be half the fisherman he is.
