Stayed on Sullivan’s this past weekend with the girlfriend and her family. Decided to surf fish Saturday late afternoon after the crowd thinned out. Saw a lot of birds diving right off the beach. Bait everywhere. Landed two whiting on the small rod immediately. Put one out live on the big rod and had a knockdown within minutes. Put out cut whiting next and had another knockdown. Put out another piece of whiting and had another knockdown and pulled back a broken leader. Had to pack it up and head back for dinner. As I was pulling the last line in I saw what I’m 99.9% was a tarpon roll right where all the bait and birds were, probably 20-30 yards off the beach. It wasn’t a porpoise. I saw 4-5 feet of the fish’s back, which was greenish blue and did not have a dorsal fin. Didn’t see any silver but I can’t imagine what else it would be? looked real hard for the next few minutes and it never resurfaced.
Good report nice to hear about bait moving off the beach. I had a buddy catch a HUGE tarpon about 10 years ago in S.C. off the beach. A rare occurance but it can happen
Did it look like this?
