Lures in the surf..

Do any of you surf anglers use lures in the surf? Plugs, pencil poppers, metal, buck tails etc…? If so, how is the action? Also, where do you like to use lures? Jetties, troughs etc…
I am wanting to branch out a little from bait fishing.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much

Jason

suspending and sinking jerk baits can be good on the trout if you know they are in a particular area but the water has to be relatively calm and clear for them to work otherwise, standard plastic jigs can be effective near groins, jetties but are of course hit or miss. bait is king in the surf.

I know they throw lures of the Folly pier for Spanish Mackerel. The FishingDuo guy and girl are always talking about it.

Badonk-a-donk hp, 1oz, silver mullet. When it’s, flat. My favorite inshore top water as well.

I always fished bait in surf unless I have a school come by close. 1/2 - 3/4oz Hopkins with short Malin leader will reach them. Usually blues. If real clear water and frequent bites I have tried a grub or mud minner on a jig head.

When the spanish are jumping a gotcha will work.

Caught my first blue on a 2oz spoon the other day, spoon was just a bit smaller than the (**() blue though! Haven’t tried a lot of lure fishing in CHS yet

Caught several dozen lady fish this weekend throwing gotchas and buck tails in the surf. Once they are thick enough that you can’t keep bait out more then a few mins I start plugging

I had an old school roommates dad teach me some surf fishing basics years ago at MBSP. He always had a 7-8’ rod with a Hopkins in his cart. I hardly ever saw him use it. The couple times I did I was about to freakin crap 'cause I had nothing rigged and ready to cast. He stacked about 6 back to back and the school was gone. I always had one since - even in a boat. If you go 10 times and don’t have a casting rig on standby 2x - both those times a school will boil the water like piranha’s and you will be kicking yourself in the ass for not having one. Don’t ask how I know>

I had a buddy that use to live in Fla. He says there the water is more clear and lures much more productive in the surf. He said he had slayed the pomps many times with one of those “Spec Rigs” - two small bucktail jig heads rigged to a swivel - tipped with a small pieces of shrimp. Like once the bite was on they went to lures.

I have had many of my better fish caught fishing a green bucktail tipped with a mud minnow fished on cover. Some from bank and most from a boat.
