Obviously a big school of winter mullet. Hehehe #128527;
How do you take that photo? Looks like it’s from a drone almost??
Yes from a Mavic Pro drone at low tide. The water looks different because I ran the video thru GoPro filters to see clearer. I knew they were Reds but could never see
any spots so I paddled out to make sure. The picture only shows about a third of them. They were in an isolated 3 ft deep pool way off the main creek. Caught one, released it and left them undisturbed.

Very cool pic! We have debated taking the drone with us a time or 2… now I’m actually going to have to…thanks lol
Also, welcome to the site!

I bought a polarized filter for the camera lens which helps a lot. Thanks, i’ve actually been a member since Jan 2007, but forgot my password and my email has changed and I have no way to recover it. I was just kudzu then.

I think its great that you caught one and moved on–I think the easy thing to do is wear them out. It takes a lot of understanding, respect, and control to move on from a school like that. Cheers.

I don’t know a thing about you, but I like your style. Respect for the resource, and that’s a fantastic shot.

And you’ve forgotten it 55 times since then?
Good choice on the rod, btw. I absolutely love my ALX BOKU rods!
ALX recently started a kayak tournament series. I think it’s it called the ALX Rods Kayak Challenge.

Cool picture, but I sure hope we don’t start seeing drones all over the place. I believe it is an unfair advantage.
Thats very awesome. I wanna bring my drone down but i definitely need to fly it more

1). I don’t know where you live but drones have been “all over the place” for quite some time now.
2). What exactly does an “unfair advantage” have to do with recreational fishing? It’s not a contest. If someone has more experience than you, does that give them an “unfair advantage” over you too? Plus, schools move so where you may find them (with a drone or otherwise) one day doesn’t mean they’re going to be there the next.

Drone’s give you eyes on what you otherwise can’t see. If you can afford one and know how to use it, go for it. There is no unfair advantage in fishing unless you are in a tournament and there are ground rules. Lived that life for a looooong time, recreational fishing is a free for all for the most part so long as you stay compliant with DNR you are good to go. Would love to try a drone to see reds that I know live shallow in ponds that I can’t push my boat up in to but would consider wading to and also to spot gators that may be laying in wait! YIKES!!! LOL!!

Maybe I’m the minority, but I have a problem with using drones for fishing. Unless your life depends on protein from fish, at what point does it stop? I mean, you gotta ask yourself at some point why am I fishing? For me, as an engineer, the fun is figuring out the patterns and where they might be and might not. Being observant, using my eyes and ears. The electronics I have are still not a given as far as finding fish. I’d rather figure it out on my own than use a drone to fly around the marsh and locate every fish that is in an area. Why do you fish?

I’m with you Dave (and also an engineer). I love the challenge of figuring out the solution from all the variables all the while enjoying the inshore creeks and rivers. Hopefully, one day I have the time to hone the skills and catch more fish.
Not that I think drones will ever grow to the level of the impacts “fish finders” have had on the fishing industry but this is very similar to the attitude towards fish finders when they first came out. Plenty of people turned their noses up at them and down towards folks that used them. They said the same “love the challenge” things we’re sayingn now and yet I’d be willing to bet a large sum of money that the overwhelming majority, if not all of the folks on this site that have a boat, have at least one “fish finder” on their boat. I personally have two on mine. Again, I don’t believe for one second that drones will ever grow to have the same impact as fish finders. Personally, I believe this is much ado about nothing. Just like with fish finders, just because you “find” the fish doesn’t mean you’re going to catch the fish. It still takes, and alwasy will take, the skill some of you are referencing to catch fish. Yes, finding them is a part of the equation as well but simply finding them doesn’t put them in the boat.

Valid points. However, it seems to be trending to a point where you can look at your smart phone before you go to the landing and get a report like: There are 15 redfish on the flat behind Juba island, here’s a gps marker. I just wonder how much is too much. Its a philosophical question
