My friend and his girl friend saw and took pictures of a manatee in fishing creek the other day. They watched it for over 30 minutes. I looked at the pictures and they were amazing. I will try and get one posted on here soon. Would loved to have seen it in person.
“Good instincts usually tell you what to do long before your head has figured it out.”
I saw one working its way south down the beach at the Laroche Street beach access a couple of years ago. It was pretty cool…and unexpected.
The funny thing is there was this somewhat redneck family on the beach, and they were going nuts, yelling “it’s a sea cow! it’s a sea cow!”. I laughed my tail off.
Manatees are very cool to see, though. I lived in Florida briefly when I was right out of college, and remember watching one in a creek down there. They seem to be about as peaceful an animal as you will find.
Just trying to learn every bit I can about saltwater fishing…
I have been going to Edisto for 37 years and have only spotted 2 manatees. the first was probably about 20 years ago and saw he or she off of the steamboat landing pier. At that time I didn’t know what in the world it was so it scared the heebie jeebies out of me.
Last August we were skiing in the first creek on the left (heading away from ocean) in the north edisto river and while a friend was getting to ski a manatee popped up literally like 10 feet from him and scared the living daylights out of him. I was lauging so hard I couldn’t stand it because I told him it was just trying to mate with him.
I’ve never seen one in Bay Creek; however the folks that hang out at the marina say they are pretty common coming up there looking for the fresh water from the hoses hanging off the docks, etc.
Ive seen three of them at edisto over the years. The first one i ever saw I was probably 6 or 7 and was sitting on the old shrimp docks where EWT is now. I had my feet in the water and the manatee came up almost between my feet and scared the everliving crap out of me. I thought it was a sea monster and my dad about fell out of the boat laughing at me. The last one i saw was at the marina on A dock 2 or 3 summers ago.
Saw one last year in the upper part of Bohicket I was anchored and fishing it came up 10 feet from the boat also saw a 3 ft dia sea turtle there last weekend. Never thought they came into the river… glad to see them though…
