Manatee sighting

Couldnt believe my eyes, swam right under a dock in store creek where I was fishing and throwing a cast net. Not 15 feet from me today. Guess you never know what you might see

I have seen them in the S Edisto at St. Pierre when I was anchored up fishing. I had no idea they were around this area. I think it would be really cool to see one up close like you have.

I’ve seen them at Breach Inlet at at Pitt Street before. The one at Breach came near the edge (Sullivan’s side, very close to the highway rockpile), and at Pitt St. there were two of them poking their heads out of the water out near the end of the pier where the water flows in from the harbor.

I saw another “something” at Breach once, stone cold dead and bloated, floating on the water. It seemed too big to be a dolphin (girth) but it WAS bloated, so I never could figure out what it was, it wasn’t close enough for me to tell.

I know we aren’t supposed to call out when we see one - the water police will be all over the area - but a few years back, we were down at Steamboat throwing the net off the dock for bait. My net hit the water and I tell you, it looked like an explosion just below the surface. Didn’t know what I had scared up, but thought I would throw the net back out real quick to see what I might catch - You know, “Hey ya’ll watch this” kinda moment. Fortunately, I paused just long enough to see that rascal breach the surface right in front of us. Craziest thing I have ever seen. Cool, but at the same time, glad I didn’t recast the net. That guy and I both would have been in trouble.

About a week ago I was crabbing with the wife and baby off the park pier by the Marina and one swam right under the dock. It scared the ever living daylights out of me.

Pluffdaddy… kinda like the chance of snagging a gator in your net at Bushy. Makes you think twice about putting a self-tightening loop around your wrist when you tosss the net.

Redfish never really thought of that even when my sons threw the net, you sent a chill down my spine. No kidding

Redfish, ever since that time, I quit wrapping the rope like that. I was throwing a 10’ net and had I ‘netted’ him, there would have been no way to release the net from my arm before hitting the water. He literally bolted when the net hit the water. It looked like an underwater explosion.
