marine speakers

I need some advice on marine stereo speakers. I have got 4 6.5 in my boat now but they do not perform like I want. Does anyone have any suggestions on what type of new ones to get?

I bought Infinity Marine speakers for my boat and after two seasons they are woking great.

Bought mine on ebay for about half the price of WM or BW at that time

Sea Pro 210cc
Yamaha 200 4 Stroke
Dodge 1500 4x4 HEMI

I bought my stuff on Ebay as well. I also bought a marine amp there. Much cheaper than WM or other places.

best speakers I have owned…Including Infinity

I’ve got bazooka 8"s in mine and really like them. I third the ebay recommendation. Save lots of $$$

Key West Sportsman 186
Yamaha 150 4 Stroke

definately look at JL audio (not JBL) marine speakers. they would be my first choice. very clear at running speeds.

My Poly-Planers take a lot of abuse and sound good to me.

I like the looks of these, but I don’t know how good they’d sound.

Eh, I’m kinda over poly-planar. I’ve owned 3 pairs of them and I’ve probably installed 5 or six pairs for friends of mine. Two of my six have blown on me, and the overall sound of each speaker from model to model is inconsistent. I was kinda disappointed with the “premium series” the sound is clear but there is very little low end, even for the 7" speaker.

Also, I called once to try to order a replacement grill for a “premium series MA-5106” and they said “Uh, those are made under contract, and it don’t look like we’re gonna get any more of those for a while, call back in a few months.”

The best I can tell is that poly-planar does not actually design and make most of their products, they just slap their name on some one else’s design and raise the price. For instance, most of the “West Marine” brand speakers are identical to the poly-planars, and poly-planar is now selling a Jensen CD player with a “PP” logo.

Points being:

  1. Some poly-planars are nice speakers, but I think there’s better speakers out there for the money.
  2. Because they source from several different suppliers, Just because one model of poly-planars sounds good, does not mean another will.

I couldn’t be happier with my Infinity 6x9’s, though.

Hey Baker, are your Infinity 6x9's model # 6902 or 6912? I don't need the power rating of the 6912 and I don't like the lack of a grill. Planning on ordering 6902s.

I have Bose and have been very pleased. They have speakers that have a “sub” built in and they sound really good without an amp and they hold up well. Pretty pricey though.

i have been an audio installer for 20 yrs and i have one word for ya. power! i would increase the amp power first then think speakers as long as urs aren’t damaged. or do both if ur budget permits. and yea the sonys r crap. most of the others mentioned here will perform fine. teamsound@hotmail.com if u have any questions be glad to help

I just ordered these. I hope they sound good…

I’ve got the 6902’s. I’m not a big fan of the wakeboard-towerish looks of the 6912’s. Been very pleased with them–I’m pushing them with a JBL Marine 60x2 amp that I picked up on eBay for $85. Worth. Every. Penny. If you’re doing a a new install or a substantial upgrade I’d seriously consider doing something like this. Even at low volume, the sound is so much richer than running off the head unit alone.

I ordered & helped install a set of these for a buddy of mine a few years back, they sound pretty nice–much better than the PP “premium” 7" round speakers we also installed.

I doubt they’ll sound better than that 550 Horsepower stereo you have hanging on the back already  arrg arrg arrg.

DDD, I hope you didn’t cut 28 holes in the boat!

I was actually replying to wickedlester - I’ve got 4 speakers and I can hear it just fine… the guy across the harbor can’t hear it, but they can listen to wickedlesters.
