Marlin 6-3

Put lines in on a nice temp break just shy of the Edisto banks. Really nice looking warm water eddy laying right over the ledge. Second time I have seen this pattern this spring. Same results both times- nothing. Pulled everything in and ran out toward the 226 with the intent of finding the western edge of the Gulf Stream but ran into a forming weed line in 500ft on what I think was the other side of that eddy. Immediately hooked up with a nice 40ish lb bull and two slingers. Fished there for a while and got a couple more. Weed line broke up but we stayed in the area and had a clip pop and dropped back and saw the fin. Came tight on our first billfish of the year. Made a long run and then headed toward the boat. Had to gun the boat forward to keep the line tight. Got the bill sfter a shirt fight, removed the hook and after a couple of quick pics released a lively fish. Did our usual troll home inside the ledge and got a big King in 140ft. Pretty nice ocean all day.

nice fishing!!

Nice work we had the same game plan and ended up on that same weed line with you and managed a few nice dolphin, but nothing in that size range. Congrats on the Blue. Ocean was very quiet until we found that weed line.

Looks like a white

Same thought as skinneej…?

I thought the same thing but didn’t really get a look since I was driving and the guy who released it said it was a small blue. Just went through the video on the go pro and you are right on, it’s definately a white. Good eye.

I found it hard to tell from just the headshot, but its a dead giveaway in the gopro with the rounded dorsal fin. Would someone enlighten me as to how it looked more like a white from the headshot photo?

Congrats on the nice catch regardless

My buddy is still insisting its a juvenile blue. Says they have a more rounded dorsal fin. Guy is from S FL and is an IGFA observer while I am a mere recreational angler from SC who has seen a grand total of one white marlin in my life. If one of the sites experts will confirm that it is a white so I can tell him he is full of sh#% I would greatly appreciate it. :sunglasses:

Haha ill go with what the IGFA observer says until proven otherwise

Still a great catch!

Pectoral fins, dorsal fin, and anal fin are all round… White marlin

Yep, it’s a white, but I don’t care what color it is, it’s a dang nice catch!! :sunglasses:

I still have to think it’s a Srtriped (White) - especially with the additional shot.

millacd: The first photo posted showed quite wide and rounded pectoral fins, both traits of the Striped Marlin.

Here’s the kicker. If y’all thought it was a small Blue, then it was one BIG Striped Marlin!!!

Well that would be interesting seeing as they are not found in the Atlantic Ocean

We’re y’all trolling a normal spread (i.e. Skirted hoo) when you caught the king on the troll in?

Sorry for my confusion. Was unaware that the striped is a different fish and not found in Atlantic. Please note my first reference was to a White Marlin and that is what was meant. I still hold that if the fish was thought to be a small Blue it would probably be a very big White.
