Launched at 11:00 out of CC Haig on Pinckney Island yesterday and went up the May River to try the creek mouths on the second half of the falling tide. Tried several on the north side with no luck and then went across the river and tried some that looked promising. I think that I was too late for those as the tide was nearly slack.
My last target was to fish the incoming tide on the flat at the mouth of the river. When I got there I had to wait about an hour for water to come up onto the flat. I followed it trailing a live mud minnow under a cork and casting a gulp scented bait rigged on a 1/8 oz. weedless jig head.
As the water got up, I staked out w/ the push pole, threw the mm out the front of the boat in the direction of the tide flow and put the rod in a holder. I cast the gulp to the side and as soon as it hit the water and I closed the bail the drag goes zzzzzzz! Then it goes slack. I gave it a slight twitch and zzzzzzzz! again. This time it was hooked and the water around it blew up with all of his buddies. As I fought the redfish I saw his buddies moving towards my cork and though oh great. A few seconds later that rod goes off and I reached down to make sure the drag was loose enough while I continued to fight #1. I boated him and put him in the live well to recuperate while I pulled in #2 who was much smaller. After getting them both in the well to revive I tidied up the rods and then released them back to swim with their buds. #1 was about 23 inches and #2 was about 17. About a half hour later I caught #3 (on a mm) identical size to #2 and released him too.
Great day on the water but really crowded in that area.
Pic of the 23 incher. He squirmed just as the camera timer went so not such a good pic.
