Measuring Ruler's

What do you use to measure your fish? I would love to use the SCDNR sticker, however it will not stick to my boat. The surface is kind bumpy and it keeps coming off.

Whatever you do don’t use the scdnr sticker. It’s wrong.
I use a gator board. Or tape measure. DNR uses a tape measure

well thank you. That changes everything!! thank you for the info

I’ve used the Dnr sticker for years. Never had an issue. Now if a fish measured legal on the sticker and Game Warden decided that it didn’t with the tape measure I would make (**() sure to get a photograph of said fish and request a jury trial. You will beat the ticket. The sticker says right on it SCDNR. And my question before the jury would be why does the state give these out if their measurements are incorrect?. Be a very tough case for the state to prove.

If you read the DNR sticker it says for reference ONLY. If you put a measuring tape on it it will be wrong. I know a sergeant with DNR, and asked him about it he said you would get a ticket for a short fish. Just my 2 cents good luck.

I use the DNR sticker at times. Checked mine after sticking to boat with a tape measure.

Oh, it’s happened. To me, a friend and some people on this forum. It’s been discussed on here before.

I would also like too add if it’s that close throw it back. Undersized saltwater fish fines start at $400 a fish.

This has been a helpful discussion. I ordered a ruler to use in addition to the sticker

DNR ruler is crap… but like Sells stated be firm. My son got a ticket on a 23 1/2’ fish. DNR used a seamstress tape … Some times you just keep your mouth shout and carry the ticket to trial. When you have had a beer or two, even though you know you are fully functional, it is just best to cooperate.

Go to Lowes/H-depot and get on of those alum. 48" contractors rule and mount it on gunnel or on deck where you can butt fish head/nose against bulkhead:sunglasses:

A couple summers ago myself an my 2 brother-in-laws were fishing at the N Edisto nearshore reef. We caught several fish, one of them being a 14" black drum, measure just like DNR says to on the sticker. I should have told my brother in law to put it back, always use the 1/2" rule, but I didn’t. On the way back to Steamboat we got stopped by a GW. He asked to see all our safety gear and asked if we caught anything. We told him about everything including the drum, and he immediately said he needed to see that fish. They measured it with an aluminum bump board and it came out just shy of 13 3/4".

He asked how we measured it and after telling him we measured it on the sticker and it measured good, he asked if we minded him coming on board my boat so we could show him how we measured it. We showed him exactly what we did and it measured 14" perfectly. He told us that those stickers are not exact and just for reference, but since we were trying to do the right thing, he only wrote a warning and let us go in our way. We had been very respectful the whole time and I believe that is why he showed us some mercy.

The moral of this story is that those stickers are good for letting you know what the limits are, but they are not an accurate measurement by any means. Get something that won’t shrink or stretch and always go at least a half inch over the minimum or a half inch under the max.

This is my go to. Covers the slot and guaranteed not to shrink or stretch.

Sure the stickers can be off, but just because one is off doesn’t mean they’re all wrong. I laid out a sicker on the top of a cooler, measured it out with a tape, and marked each inch on the cooler with a sharpie. Sticker was dead on accurate. It was straight off the shelf at Haddrells though and hadn’t been out in the sun or anything. When you put it on just measure it out to verify and make a few marks so you know if/when it shrinks.

Well I’ve measured fish and had the dnr check and measure them and the guy measures from bottom jaw across the body to the top of the back tail fin and told me my fish was over. I showed on the dnr site how it tells us to measure them and my fish is under. His next statement is that’s how they measure them for studies and Its the accurate way and I should feel glad I got a warning for a 22 inch red. Mean while joe beer chugger wakes us and waves with his beer hand while driving the boat. Also fish shrink so if its close and its gonna be a long day throw it back.

It says on there site and the sticker that the sticker might not be accurate.

The reason is that it shrinks. If you put one on and measure it in a year you’ll be surprised at how much it actually shrinks.

Even knowing this, I apply one to my boat every year, just cut the ruler part off of the full sticker and stick it on the edge of my forward deck. It’s just a reference, and if using the 1/2" rule, you’ll always be okay. I also periodically measure the sticker to check how far off it is.

God bless the “ignore” function.

If you Google you can find metal rulers with a 90 dev bend for $20. That’s what you want. Mustad used to make one sold thru Wal-Mart but no longer…CCA has them I think. DNR rulers may measure ok at first but after being in the sun will shrink 1/4"
