Melton peter park pier

I’ve gone walking with a friend in this park a few times, and I’ve seen a couple of people fishing off of the pier in the past, what is there to catch there? I’ve googled and found an old post asking about the little pond there but not about the pier. I live on James Island and I’m looking for somewhere to fish that’s not as crowded with loud children as the county park since I go fishing to relax (maybe July isn’t the best time to try there). Any advice is greatly appreciated.

You are talking about Demetre park… There have been a couple posts recently by a guy who fishes there regularly in the Inshore Reports section, catching redfish and trout, you can look it up on the front page. Sounds like a great place to fish, not sure how crowded it is, when I have been seen a few people fishing on the pier mostly. The beach area seems a good place to fish, where he is catching things.

Been there a few times. Caught whiting and croaker off the pier. Schools of 2-3" menhaden come thru there in castnet distance. Seen some slightly legal flounder and trout come off the pier. Not too crowded, crabbing seems to be good.

Ya know, it must be nice living in Neverneverland. Remind me to come visit you, when I need a break from reality.

Anywhere else to fish there other than pier?

Ooops missed previous post

The rocks that jetting out is a good place. There’s 2 beaches there. 1 inbetween the pier and rocks, as seen in picture. And a long stretch below the rocks.

I usually fish the rock side of the beach, best spot for me, the side beach produces too though. Done far better there than the past 7 years fishing the Stono, Ashley, and Edisto RIvers by boat.

Went by this evening, guy on the beach had released a 30" redfish, and had a nice trout and a gator trout 20" or so in the bucket.

I grew up fishing that spot… before the city got there greedy hands on it. Most James Islanders know it as Sunrise Park. Which was its name before city got it. Whiting… and Small Shark is all Ive ever caught there… Used to be a good spot… Now its WAY to crowded! Try and go there on a Saturday or Sunday… No parking and Shoulder to Shoulder Fishermen on the pier. I sadly gave up on this spot a while ago.

Is the beach away from the pier by the parking lot any good?

You may want to try it again. Although I’m sure the exposure on this site doesn’t help, I’ve been scooped by boat from there a few times this summer and never saw more than 3 people on the pier.
