Went a little ways offshore with my dad and a couple of our friends over Memorial Day weekend. We brought a mix of light and heavy gear but were primarily targeting bsb and triggerfish. I dropped down and immediately hooked up with a sizable fish only to have it take off and rob me of every bit of the line on my Battle5000. While that was going on, my buddy had his circle hook straightened out by another big one. We realized that we were obviously tangling with something a little bit larger than bsb, so we upped the ante and switched to heavier gear. Despite losing a few fish to pulled hooks we wound up catching an AJ and two nice cobia–the 1st was 29 lbs. and the 2nd was 48 lbs. Unfortunately, I lost what WOULD have been our third [and by far, the biggest] cobia when it broke my 80lb. leader after a relentless 30+ minute fight. Still, it was a ton of fun and great day overall. Can’t wait to get back out there and do it again! (pics inserted below)
The 1st cobia (my buddy’s first ever!)…
And the the 2nd…
