Has anyone been catching any menhaden yet? I need to find some for chum. I looked all over the broad and port royal with no luck. Any help would be appreciated

There were some huge menhaden in PR sound, near the two buoys by Bay Point, on the high tide Thursday. Deep water in middle of the sound, not up on the beach. Saw quite a few peanuts in the Station creek/Trenchards inlet area this morning at low tide.

Peanuts = Small menhaden… You can find the menhaden off the beach just watch for the big birds. They’ll dive on them and reveal their location. Caught a mess of em in two casts last Friday.

Are those the same as “greenies”? If so they are all over the broad river pier. Boats just pull on up and just sabiki them out.

To further clarify, “greenies” are actually Threadfin Herring. They have a bright green back (with some blue tinting) and shiny silver sides and belly. The “threadfin” name comes from the long threadlike extension at the base of the dorsal fin, extending back towards the tail. When schooling at the surface, they have a different look to them than menhaden, but I can’t really describe it. You’ll get to know the difference after catching both a few times and observing. Greenies are also a different from Menhaden because they lack the oily slime that drips like snot from Menhaden. That oily slime, however, seems to be one of the qualities that makes Menhaden so attractive as a baitfish and chum.
Menhaden are also commonly called “Pogies.” Most people won’t believe this, but they were once considered quite a delicacy. Human consumption today is primarily just as an Omega-3 supplement, rather than whole fish.

how do you spot them? ride until you see a school? i understand about watching the birds, but if there aren’t any birds diving, does that mean they just aren’t there?
They ■■■■■■■■■■ the waters surface. Drive slow and you cab hear them and see them on top of the water. If you get enough menhaden in the area you can smell them…

Look for diving Pelicans. That is the only fish in our area that they will target regularly. If there is a school then you will see the pelicans from miles away diving into them.
I have seen Pelicans terring somthing up over by the boat landing @ Russ point. I think i am going over there to do some scouting there and Johnsons creak area. maybe the lagoon as well. Or is this a complete waste of my time?

Lots of menhaden off HHI last time I was there, diving pelicans or like xxxmadfire said…flickin on the top of the water. We could not find any pelicans but just sat still and listened for the flicking sound and cast. Caught plenty in no time…
Have caught a bunch right near the russ point ramp…within eye sight of it…

The Calibogue has been full of pogies. While looking for birds is a great way to find them but with a bit of experience you will be able to spot them better than the birds. Sometime they look like a shadow or a slick and sometimes you can even smell them.
