I’m in the processing of listing the specs for an upcoming build. Any thoughts on the 150hp Pro XS vs the ETEC 150 HO? Engine will be going on the back of a East Cape Vantage HP. Also considering the Suzuki 140a (have serious concerns about its lack of performance based on the current 140 they produce) and the 175 Pro XS. Any thoughts or experiences with any of these engines would be much appreciated.
Ive had many merc V6 and only one E tec! E tec wins!!!
who is going to servicing the engine? Take a look around and see how many E-Tec dealers and Mercury dealers are around, ask around and check their reputation. Personally, I’d go with the Merc without any hesitation, 175 if you can(it doesn’t weigh any more than the 150)
I love my Suzuki, haven’t had one problem with it, but it is not a powerhouse that an etec or a proxs would be. It pushes my boat very well, though.

Probably will stick with Charleston Marine for the servicing. They did a great job with my Zuke 115.
My understanding is the ProXS is cheaper, puts out more HP at the prop and is slightly more efficient but the ETEC HO is quieter and in theory has less maintenance costs (not sure if anyone is really not servicing their engines for 3 yrs). Anything else to think about?
I have an 2011 Etec (90 HP) and I will not be going 3 years without any maintenance. I put about 100 hours of operation a year; most of that is running over 3500 rpm spot to spot. I change the gear case oil every 6 months and water pump will be every 2 years. Plugs will be at least every 2 years.
Optis love to wear the electrode of the plugs; I would suggest every year if you do over 100 hours. They also have and belt and an air filter for the compressor which no one seems to change.
Evinrudes are better when it comes to corrosion protection. The steering arm and lower engine mount on 2 stroke Mercs all rust when in salt water.

if you are thinking 150, i would not go with the ProXS, just the standard opti 150
usually the proXS only offer a 12month warranty.
the suzuki 140 would be my last choice
why not a yamaha Vmax150
For a flats boat like the Vantage, where you obviously are going to fish shallow, I would buy the lightest motor. Having said that, the ProXS is not a lot more weight than the Etec so you would probably be happy with either. I am biased but I wouldn’t trade my Etec 130 (390 lbs.)for any competing outboard with comparable HP. I decided against a powerpole just for the weight savings.

Are you talking about the SHO or Hpdi? SHO is too heavy for what I want and I never see anyone talk about the 150 Hpdi. Not sure if it’s b.c the Hpdi name took such a big hit when they initially came out but I never see them, especially in the small boat market. It’s also heavier than the etec and pro xs.
So far, very happy with my ProXS. Have a 3 year warranty. Taken it to Longshore Marine for factory authorized servicing. Happy with that too. Good people.
The small block HPDI has been a reliable engine. Big block is a different story. Dont know anything about the Etec, but it has its followers. Your engine decision is probably a toss up.
either one
the v-6 hpdi weighs about 470 the 4stroke sho weighs 480, but according to corey, the proxs has a 3 yearwarranty, so I would choose that over the the ones you listed
Chris … are you an authorized Merc service center?
Hey Chris- just curious what your rational is for choosing the pro xs over the etec?
Thanks.
etec is ficht 2.0
cant even send the injectors to injector renew for cleaning
any company that proudly tells you not to do any maint for 3 years…
optis definately had issues, but they fixed them without going bankrupt
had an etec 50 hp blew up 2 monthes out of warranty, spoke to a bone fish guide in Green Turtle Key who had a 90 and he said he hated it. My best Bud in Jacksonville has a 90 and loves it. Go figure

I can’t believe you didn’t let Salty service it…
For a vantage I’d go with a 175 xs but I like speed too. That would be a very good trolling motor combo but if u want to pole a lot it wouldn’t be ideal. Probably draws around 11 inches.
Anyone know of a certified ETEC service dept around here (ie can do warranty work)?
Cape romain marine or Berkeley outdoors are 2 I know of.

The search feature for certified service technicians on the Evinrude website appears to be down but if I remember correctly Seels and Palmetto marine are the ones in the area with factory trained techs. I have yet to need to use them. I would only use factory certified techs for whatever brand of outboard you decide on.
