2 strk merc 225 on a 25’ sea fox, fished yesterday out to 750ft, roughly 55 miles out and in and trolled from 9 till 2:10 and burned 140 gallons, took 18o quarts of ice, 4 normally sized guys, rods, beer, food, 15 gallons of freshwater wash down. does that sound normal, the boat was readying 18 gph on the ride out at 26 mph o is it just a small fuel tank, only holds 150 gallons thats what scares me

That seems high to me. I had a 22’ Grady that probably weighed as much as that boat (or close to it) with a 225 OX66 and I would make pretty much that same trip on 90 gallons. I could be wrong about the weight of the boat but I know the Grady weighed about 3200 lbs. (dry hull only). The Merc is 25 more hp so that may be a difference. That just seems a little high.
Stupid question but was it full when you started? Most 2 strokes cruise right around 4000 rpm’s. I would imagine your fuel flow meter needs to be calibrated- although that seems about right. With ethanol in your fuel you can loose as much as 10% or more on fuel economy. 140 gallons seems pretty high- I would guestimate around 100 gallons for that trip. How fast were you trolling?
George Carlin said it best, ‘Think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize that half of them are stupider than that’’.
boat weighs 4000 dry sea fox specs, it was 10 gallons shy of fuel and i figured 140 gallons would be plenty so i didnt top it off, trolled about 6-8 paddle speed didnt look at the rpm’s

thats a good point about the fuel flow meter bc we havent filled it up yet to see how many gallons it took, we were just going on the fuel light being on and warning us of low fuel

No way that is right. I thought when I first read your post that you were talking about two 225’s. That would be about right for two 225 2 strokes, but not for one. Go refuel as long as you don’t mind sinking the coin into refueling and you will get your answer. Sounds like your fuel meter is off.
Based on what you said in your post burning 18 gallons/hr, assuming you ran the same speed both ways, you should have burned approx. 72 gallons running and I can’t imagine more than 15 gallons trolling (on the high side).
I would have to go fill her up b/c this would drive me crazy. If you did burn 140 gallons, something isn’t running right.
but what about dependability, gas mileage, and more power its my buddy’s dad’s boat and he thinks its underpowered, idk man its just rediculous if it is really burnin that much…where is Chris V what do u think about this

Something is bad wrong! Go to offshore reports and look at the thread titled MC commercial 4/29. We got into a debate about how little fuel the guy used. There are a lot of reports on how much everbody used. Most single 2 strokes are getting 3 - 3.5 mpg. They used 40 - 60 gallons on a typical trip like you made. I’ve got a Cape Horn 24 with twin 150 optimax and on that same basic trip I went 150 miles - used 68 gallons, 168 miles - used 72 gallons.
that’s a 90 gallon trip. 32 gallons out, 26 gallons trolling, 32 gallons in. I’ve made it many times in similar powered rigs (not just my Grady). 100 gallons MAX, seriously.
ok well as soon as i get the chance to i will fill her up and see what she takes. thanks guys i knew 140 gallons didnt seem right even if we were running 40 mph on the way in

Ha Ha there is your answer there…“buddy’s boat.” Hmm, make sure your buddy isn’t trying to get a free trip out of his fishing buddies by padding the fuel numbers…

Word of advice: NEVER leave the dock to go offshore without a FULL tank!
ok filled her up yesterday, it took 123 gallons, meaning there was roughly 27 gallons left in 150 gallon tank. so if we started with 139 gallons and there was 27 gallons when we got back if my math is correct we burned 112 gallons which is much more reasonable, ill just make sure next time to be full. but i am concerned about the fuel gauge telling us we were extremly low on fuel 27 gallons doesnt sound extremely low. thoughts
