The MAD event this year will be Friday October 11th and 12th at Freehouse Brewery. The captains meeting is on Friday and the fishing event is on Saturday. What they do is pair up volunteer fishermen and women with active duty soldiers and take them fishing. It’s simply a way to say thank you, and show them appreciation. Regarding the surf fishing trip, what happens is the fishermen and soliders meet at a boat landing. From there we board a huge ferry boat together and are taken to Morris Island for a day of fun and surf fishing. Allot of these men and women have never been fishing before and are truly appreciative. Some of them driving for hours from out of state, just to wet a line and have the opportunity to possibly catch a fish. You can make that happen. Everyone is welcome. If this is something your interested in shoot me a PM and I will get you signed up. It’s very important you PM me, so we know how many soliders we can take. If you are a surf fisher do not sign up on the site, PM me. If you are not into surf fishing the pier is an option as well. If you go the pier route you need to sign up on the web site and let them know you are “pier fishing”. Then you will be paired up with a few soldiers and just meet them at the local pier of your choice. We will be updating information on this site as we go. Take care folks, and good luck this fall:smiley:
Just a heads up pete,
I may not be able to make the meet and greet on Friday due to football games (work stuff dang it haha). But as I’ve already said, im there for saturday no doubt.
It’s no problem at all Josh. We are happy you are on board. We will bring the fishing licence waivers for the troops on the ferry Saturday, so you are good to go. It’s gonna be a fun trip. I really hope we can find a few nice fish for these soldiers. I love seeing their eyes light up:smiley:
George would you please post the link to the web site on here, so folks can easily click on it to find out information.
You got it Pete. I met with DNR the other day and the waiver is good to go , as soon as i receive the hard copy i’ll send it to Gene/Andy , look forward to seeing yall in a few weeks…

When you see “Old Glory” waving in the breeze, know that it is the dying breaths of our fallen hero’s that makes it wave.

Update for the folks going on this trip. The captains meeting is Friday October 11th at 6 pm. The location is at Free house Brewery. 2895 Pringle Street North Charleston. It’s a beautiful place on the water. FYI they have beer:+1: The meeting place for the surf trip will be where it was last year at 8 am. Don’t be late. Get directions to Springhill suites 98 Ripley point drive and just before the hotel you look to the right and will see a gravel parking lot next to the marina. Pull in there and park. You will see us. As always they will be hosting a dinner and live music for the troops and fishermen later that evening, which starts at 5 pm. The dinner will be at Freehouse brewery as well. We will pair up troops on the ferry on our way to Morris Island. Leave your surf carts at home and back pack your gear in, and bring whatever you need for a day of fishing. We will have troops to help with carrying stuff. Look forward to fishing with you folks. We have a good team put together, hopefully the fish show. If anyone else wants in on this fishing trip with the soldiers, your more than welcome. We would love to have you. Just let me know on this thread, so I can pair up a couple of soliders with you. Best of luck, Pete.
Pete I would love to sign up this year as a guide for surf . However I cannot get this stupid instant messenger to work. If you still have my number please give me a call.
Thanks Lunkerlover, got you taking care of.We will divide troops on boat, I will talk to all captains very soon.
Are there any pier lurkers here in Pete’s thread that want to fish? I actually have a troop requesting the pier again this year but no pier volunteer yet. Let me know!

I fish the pier sometimes and know a lot of the regulars and a couple of them are military and x military and if there’s a troop or troops that want to hit the pier, I can volunteer, and they will be more then welcomed. Pier fishing can be really hit or miss but I would definitely give it a good effort. In October there are good chances at some quality fish but it depends on the water conditions.
Good on you 40. If I recall correctly they let the soldiers fish the pier for free last year. Do they issue a fishing license waiver for the troops off the pier to where it’s legal? Another thing, bring a camera and tape measurer, I think a prize to the troop that catches the biggest red is happening, the pier has some good ones and you would have a good shot at it Andy can shoot you the names of the soldiers looking to hit the pier and you just meet them that morning. Good luck.
Sounds good.
Thanks 40! What I’d need is for you to register as a boat. Just leave the boat info out and put Folly Pier in the comments. Once registered, I’ll email his contact info.

We have license waiver and that’ll apply for the troops pier fishing as well. I haven’t yet, but typically the parks waive the pier fee for the troops but not for the volunteer. I’ll try to get out to the pier before the end of this coming weekend to let them know and get them to waive the fee for the troops again.
The reason I try to have a pier volunteer or two is for the troops who ask if they can bring family with them. We can’t really accommodate families on the boats, but can much more easily have them bring family with them to the pier or surf. Less about the catching of fish, more about the letting them know we’re thankful for their service and having the ability for those who want to bring their kids to be able to do so.

Ok so since I’m going to be getting rid of my fishing cart, I needed a better carrying set up for my beach trips. Hopefully I found it in this set up.
It’s a bucket with padded lid (seat) in an insulated sleeve (keep bait cold), with big enough side pockets to hold my hook box, extra mono, wire leader drops, knife, pliers, and weights. Also has two drink holders. Also has backpack straps.
Also thanks to dparker, I bought some Velcro straps to bind together my rods and spikes for easier carrying.
Going to load it up tomorrow and hopefully get a test run on the beach to see how she goes.
Edit: won’t let me attach the picture dang it haha
The fancy indestructible bucket market is taking off. I saw one the other day that was 150.00. About pooped myself and thought I was on a hidden camera show. Pack light folks. We will keep you informed regarding whether we score some bait, but won’t know until Thurs or Friday. Hopefully we score, but have a back up plan ready if we don’t. For the love of God, I hope a few fish show, see you soon.
My bucket wasn’t quite that much ha ha. Thankfully it was fairly cheap and it’s loaded up and ready to go this morning I’m gonna see if I can catch some whiting maybe a few blues to bring along. Thankfully to the set up it will be very light and easy to carry stuff around.
