Minimum size rod/reel for surf

I’ve been primarily a fly fisherman most of my life. But have been using spinning gear of late, in the Wando, Cooper, and some of their creeks. Medium light setups which have been fine for what I’ve caught so far. Nothing too big, nor all that many e I there to be honest. Thought I might like to give surf fishing a try. What is the minimum size combo, line, etc to be safe? Thanks in advance for any help.

For your average surf fishing trip targeting most any “surf fish” ; whiting, spots, croaker, speckled seatrout, pompano, black drum and even good sized red drum, smaller sharks and rays, any 7’ med. heavy spinning rod with a 50 sized real spooled with say 20# mono is all you need. Use what ever bottom rig you are comfortable with. Most days, in the surf, 2-3 oz. weight is okay. Remember, “Smaller hooks catch more fish”.

While not the minimum rod/reel… Check out this badass combo: http://old.charlestonfishing.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=149729
