You may find this hard to believe, but I don’t have her number. Email has proven to be something she doesn’t prefer or something I suppose.
The uscg was pon pon’ing all vessels. They called on 16 for over 2 hours. Everyone on our boat was worried because we knew the kind of risks she takes as well as her inexperience. Let me stress that this has absolutely nothing to do with her ability as an angler.
I did not see a report, but had heard another boat finally telling the coast guard she was on the way in. I wondered what happened.
I wondered if she has an external vhf speaker on order as a reward to herself for catching more swords. Or perhaps a spot messenger. Or maybe different communication with crew before an overnight long range trip. Or maybe a new vhf antenna or soldering job. Who knows?
Another thing- I have been given grief on this forum by others when similar things happened to me. Its what happens when you post lots of reports and seem to never have a bad trip.
I learned from those situations and moved on. Others can learn too if you share sometyhing besides only the high fiveable moments… That’s what fishing really is. It isn’t about winning or losing. Not sure why I got called out to fish competitively on the last page. Everyone knows I am not going to win that one…

Phin you seem like a very detail oriented person. It seems you would have noticed her phone number is on her tag line? You don’t seem to miss much, but you’ve missed that? She fished Fri night and Saturday during the day. The Coast Guard calls were Saturday during the day for 2 hours. Nothing more is heard. Would you assume the CG just gave up, or all was ok? Nothing on the news, nothing on fishing boards about a boat going down, people lost or whatever. 2 days later you put up an are you ok post. Seriously, it was a bash camouflaged as I was worried about you. If you want to bash her then just do it and bash the girl directly.

It was a “what did you catch, and what went wrong?” post, honestly. I did not think she was in trouble anymore after Dr. Leman answered the USCG finally. And I also did not think she would post about whatever it was that went wrong during her trip, if anything, unless called out.
You telling me I am wrong to call out somebody who calls out others all the time on here???
Why is LSK any different than anybody else? She doesn’t need a handicap or special treatment, and to say so is a bit of an insult to her don’t you think, Pancake?

Yes I agree. She doesn’t seem to need any special treatment. Seems to me that she is just a fisherperson who loves it as much or more than most and gets as excited as anyone about going fishing. That’s why I don’t understand starting a conversation just to bash her. No matter what the camouflaged intent was. Please tell me you didn’t laugh to yourself after you presses send! Not even a little bit of vindictiveness?
Who is this Pancake guy, that knows what has been years in the making. Oh, he has been following, the unfolding of this for what now, 30 days or so?
I’m good friends with LSK and been following this board for years. I just hate seeing a bunch of guys gang up on her. Does that answer your question?

If I wanted to be vindictive, I would have brought up any one of several other more serious things regarding her catches that would in no way benefit anyone here…
Hurting anything more than the pride of any of us on here is bad for the rest of us. I am a firm believer of that.
She is not as much like “the rest of us” as you may want to think. She does not even seem to think anything should have been done differently by her as captain of her boat Fri/Sat. Note her responses above. “crew member didn’t tell _____ when we’d be back.” “I was running in at 35kts.” “everyone that cared about me was on the other boat that I’d talked to.”
If I had our USCG calling for me (has happened before, btw, when I was on the way in and overdue) and then getting as far as the level of a pon-pon broadcast, then I would be doing everything I could to make sure such a false alarm did not happen again. I would invest in a VHF that I could hear while running and that would talk to USCG sector jacksonville, charleston or whoever if they had a high rise antenna and airplane network and were trying to raise me for several hours. You learn why you’re supposed to have your VHF on Channel 16 at all all times. Not just for yourself but for someone else who may be in trouble out there. If you don’t learn in sea school, then you learn from experience.

i am not sure they make a VHF that i can hear while i am running 30knt on my center console,and yes i have external speakers…
as far as VHF’s go i end up turning my volume down most of the time while fishing just because about the time i need to hear something my crew has to say someone feels the need to talk,just aggravates the **** out of me,i go to get away from all that stuff…
by the way the CG was trying to contact us sat also,seems i have an epirb that sends a random signal while running in at 30 knots…didn’t hear the call till i was almost docked…they did scare the crap out of the wife…luckly we were way early on our return…
oh yeah we went 0 for 1 on swords…

You need to check out the Icom 602 or 604 if you can’t mount a good external speaker near your head. When you are that far offshore, you typically do not hear anybody but the towing companies or USCG when you have your squelch turned up a little.
If you are fishing in April-July with the rest of the CarolinaGoldMahiDoradoKingfisherman fleet, then I totally understand your points about aggravation. You gotta admit that there’s comedic value in listening around 3PM on those days though…
Not monitoring 16 while offshore is a bit like having a cell phone without voice mail or text messaging and never turning the phone on unless you’re calling out, isn’t it?
Another way to make the point is- what if everyone cut their VHF off or turned down whilst offshore like you do, Gut Wrench?

i guess i should have clarified,i have 2 radios,the one scanning tends to get turned way down,the one on 16 is usually not a problem till you get near the harbour and you have the 15,ooo radio checks.
i have good speakers mounted near my head but with the wind noise i can not hear what they say(unless we stop),its part of getting old the hearing is getting bad…
I agree that LSK could have done some things differently. I’m sure we can all say the same and have learned from our mistakes in the past. But some of you are a little harsh. I enjoy her reports. Love the Mojo reports and all the good info Phin posts too. Maybe this is an outsiders perspective but it seems like there are alot of people that treat her unfairly.

You need something with a pilot house it sounds like. Get you a high back chair with flip down arm rests. Point all the AC vents at yourself then.
The Van Halen can be turned up on the exterior speakers as loud as your crew needs!
