What do the Great Whites look like? For that matter, what about makos, hammer heads, bulls or tigers? That would be great to know. I mean, if before you roll over the side in a hundred feet you could know (what was it 95% accuracy?) what species is about to eat you, you could at least prepare mentally for the attack. Or, maybe grab a few extra spears and go down there on a mission to kick some shark a$$.

Nevermind, a shark is not a grouper/ARS/…

In all seriousness, do you really take issue that people question the ability to genuinely do this? It seems like there is some animosity here between you and G1 and Skinee. Its sort of like Fritz’s he took it like a jugbelly redfish. They throw the bait and you wail it.

Anyway, he is not as bad as you spin him. I have fished with much larger egos that have put MUCH less in the boat.

Bottom fishing doesnt take much skill, it doesnt matter if you are in a 17ft CC. Ive caught Sailfish,Dolphin and Tuna in my old 15ft whalure years back, whats the point.

The biggest thing is anchoring,it has to be just about perfect,any good head boat captain will tell you this.

I worked on head boats every summer from the age of 12 to 19, back in the late 70’s and early 80’s in PCB,Florida. I have seen Redsnapper caught on hubba bubba bubblegum, to tin foil, to a vienna sausage. When fish are hungry they will eat anything.

When theres hundreds or thousands of fish under your boat, and you drop lines down something is gonna grab the hook, without second guessing what it is.

Not knocking you phin, but seriously moving up to 30 spots in a day of bottom fishing, who get to pull the anchor up that much?

Trolling is harder than bottom fishing, you pretty much get just 1 chance at a fish, that has taken the wtfb line or one up close. Bottom fishing, ive been broken off by big grouper and a hour later catch the one who broke me off.

Best Grouper bait of choice for me is fresh cut 10 inch strips of Bonita. BSB also eats better in my opinon then Red Snapper, its kinda of like the Redfish everyone wants to catch one, but would rather eat a nice Flounder instead.

Sells the next time we fish, ill bring a picture of me and a 52lb Gag that I caught when I was 15. But to catch the size of the one you caught last week these days and times and a over fished species, thats a hog. BTW wheres my check?

  1. It is agreed that catching bottom fish is much easier to master than trolling. Right?

  2. Since it is easier many use it as a stepping stone to bigger fish. i.e. trolling for pelagics Right?

  3. Good captains catch bottom fish and Great captains troll for pelagics. Right?

Does this mean that the local charter captains that troll are much better fisherman than those who focus primarily on the bottom dwellers?

S4G, thats not my point on whos the better Captains,I wasnt comparing either.I dont know how you came to that conclusion?

I never compared a head boat Captain, to a trolling charter boat Captain. Fishing in general is a tough way to make a living, the ole salts who have been around for along time,and have made a career on the water are in business still because they are good at what they do.

I would agree with your #1 and #2 observation. I think alot of people troll to catch bigger keeper sized fish and the excitment when the line goes screaming off the reel. #3 Wrong.

In the fishing industry a good reputation is what its all about,or any line of business for what its worth.

I did not want to bring his name into this but that is who I was thinking of. This was not directed at you as much as others, just wanted everyone to be careful down playing bottom fishing over trolling. Personally I would much rather catch a tuna than a grouper but some of the “old salts” that bottom fish forget more about fishing everyday than I will ever know. Catching schoolie dolphin swarmed behind the boat is just as easy as catching BSB if you have the numbers. Similar comparisons could be made on catching the big boys. Everyone has there passion, I just disagree with busting some guys butt cause you think your passion is better or more difficult than his.

There is no difference between Phin and Wes. Phin is who you have heard and will hear at SAFMC meetings. Come to the May 13 meeting and tell them how you think bottom fishing is super easy and needs to be shut down. Come tell the people there who do it for a living that they have an easy job.

I have been bottom fishing since I was 5 years old, and I have been trolling since I was in jr. high. That has nothing to do with whether I am better or worse than you. I don’t care. Why should it matter to you? I only say where I’m coming from so you’ll realize how blindly arrogant you’ve let yourself become.

Dude. Are you completely insane? Who said anything about anybody or anything being better than anybody else? Where do you get your comments from?

All this is about is you thinking you can identify over 300 species of fish that live on our live bottom on your 7 inch sonar screen. And then telling us we suck because we can’t. That’s it. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Now, you can try and spin it like you’re the saint of bottom fishing and were the evil devils that don’t want you to share you knowledge…but honeslty, there’s only a handful of yum-yums that will buy that.

Now here’s a pro-tip for you Phin…you can NOT identify individual species on your sonar. You can make educated guesses based on many variables, but you can not identify fish’s species on your sonar.

There…now we’ve gotten back to helping each other.
