MOJO '78 Mako 25 Rebuild - Got my Mojo workin

1978 Mako 25.
2800lb est. dry weight
25’7" LOA
8’ beam
23 degree deadrise

The boat looked like this when we got it.

Went and got the boat with the trailer my 21 was on, found a trailer a buddy needed to sell, then went and swapped the boats out at the ramp.

Hydraulic steering cylinder on the Evinrude’s locked up. Unbolted from motor so motor could turn. Hooked a jumpbox up to the boat’s battery cables, and all lights, pumps and the motor trim and tilt work. Wow!

All of that will get removed though. I think the only things I’ll leave on the boat are the compass, steering wheel and lifting eyes!

Let some mystery oil soak in the evinrude for a few days in case it was locked up, but I went to it and could turn the flywheel by hand. Jumped the starter solenoid, and the motor’s got good compression readings. May get a set of plugs and see if she will fire off. If so, I will be able to sell it as a running motor instead of a midsection and powerhead at least.

Thought about keeping it to push the boat, but I think it’s too little HP.

Anyways, some friends of mine will help me with bottom paint removal this weekend hopefully, and I’ll have an idea of what, if anything needs to be repaired on the running surface. Hope it won’t be much!

Talking with a guy who does boat restoration in town to help me out with a lot of this work and have the boat running by summer or early fall. I think he’ll do good work, and I’ll do what I have time to help with.

I will post updates.

Enjoy.

I’m excited to see how this thing turns out. I’ll be around for the next week so if you want a hand, give me a call.

yella bote
black motor

I have a really nice pop up cleat to throw in as a boat warming present.

Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!

Thats a rough lookin boat, but it will be really nice restored! i would love to have the money to do that stuff!

A small fish in hand is better than big fish in promise

Is it just the pictures or is the center console really short? the steering wheel looks really low to deck. Are you going to keep the console? I cant wait to see how it turns out!

“look low and away…But watch out for in your ear.”

Boat will be modernized and rigged with the best stuff I can get. Probably putting an ox66 on until the f300 v6’s on the used market get cheap.

No loans.

No crazy taxes or insurance.

No depreciation.

And lots of mojo.

This is a great project boat, these old Mako’s are real battle wagons in the ocean. You are going to like the way this boat rides in the ocean. Phin if you haven’t already check out som e of the projects that were done on the Clasic Mako Site, lot of info on there about rebuilding these old Mako’s.
Can’t wait to see this project unfold

I look at that project and can see the potential she has. Looks like a lot of fun.

Was she named “Mojo” already?

Mojo’s what I’ll call her, and what I want her to have.

No idea of name before.

Did someone bury it? That is a lot of dirt in the fish boxes and sump?

Good luck. Looks like you have a hell of a project. When are you trying to have it ready by?

he works for free and the last one i saw pictures of, looks like he does really nice work

Love that hull! Had one lined up to buy last year but couldn’t get the title worked out. Who have you been consulting with here in town? I have an old anacapri that I’m wanting to restore but I really need someone to look at it with me to point me in the right direction.

A little time with a Shop-vac, pressure washer and a scrub brush and the starting point won’t look so bad. She’s got mojo…you can see it in her lines.

The more we just complain…the more things stay the same.

Looks like a good project boat. Hope you got a good deal on her. First and most important part has tested and passed, it floats.

A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.

Love that running surface. Do you plan on keeping/rehab the current console or build a new one? What is the fuel capacity and is there any room to increase that?
