Fished in Garden City last week. Used mole crabs for the 1st time. I know they are popular in Florida, Outer Banks, etc but I can’t recall them being mentioned on this board. Are they harder to find in the Charleston area or just not a productive bait?
If you find them down here, let me know. Probably the best big Whiting and Pompano bait around. Between Folly and IOP I have not seen any worth keeping in 3 seasons. Now the renourishment on Folly, forget it. Have found small ones on IOP, but they are scarce. The sand is to coarse in the lowcontry. They tend to like the fine muddy stuff.
Good Luck!

Sandfleas? I know they sell them at a gas station in goose creek. Fish don’t usually care if they’re alive or dead
If you want to catch “nice” Pomps consistantly, you want to use LIVE Fleas. And most of my biggest ( 2 lb. class ) Whiting have been on live fleas. Of course my experience.

DParker fer sure.Sandfleas are the ticket for Pompanos, when I lived in Surfside that was definitely my favorite bait,I have read on here several folks say they are far and few between to find. I used an old fishfry basket in the sand and could scoop enough for a day. As I recall I caught most of mine when the tide was coming in.
You just look at the waves going out and you can see them digging in the sand. Walk over and pull them out.
How do you guys rig them I’ve actually not had much success with them. I think mine just dig themselves in the sand on the hook…
Thanks for the info. I’ll be on the lookout when I make it back down to the coast. The fishing in Garden City last week was terrible but the one whiting that I managed on a mole crab was about 1 lb and pulling like a redfish.
I just rip off the large triangular tail/leg and they cant dig anymore. Hook it from belly through to the back and send it out.

A good place to catch mole crabs is Edisto Beach State Park on the beach if you dig in a couple of spot’s their you will find some. You can also surf fish while you wait. I have caught a shark, some nice whiting there.
X2 on what wooddog said. Been catching them on Edisto for many years.
