Coming up to Lake Murray for a few days. Going to try my luck at Striper fishing, but I really don’t expect to catch anything since I have only been once (with a guide)years ago. Got some big Ben Parker spoons and might try some live herring if someone happens to sell them on the lake. I have good electronics on board so I should be able to locate them…I’m a salt water guy, so any help on this subject from you Striper fisherman would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
The fish are in the “big pond”(big area out in front of the dam up to Spence Islands) on the bottom in 70’-90’+. I’ve heard of people catching them just off of the bottom in 100 FOW.

What Bowhunter said. Get live bait and spot lock an area. Best fish I’ve seen marked were in 80-90fow from the bottom up to 60fow. Few have been chewing off and on in August so far from most accounts I’ve heard. You can hit Ned’s Better Bait and Tackle and put in at Jake’s Landing or go to Lake World and put in at the Dam. If you have a Navionics or similar chip it’ll be easy to find the fish.
Thanks for the help! One more question, Is there anywhere to buy live herring on the lake from my boat. Will be staying near Dreher Island and leave my boat docked where we are staying. Thanks again.

Kevin may be at the dock at Billy Dreher. If not, David is at the dam boat ramp every morning from about 5:00am until maybe 7:00. He usually is tied up to the dock. Big Carolina Skiff with a big tank in the boat. That’s a little bit of a run from Dreher, but…

Got to the dam at 0800…folks fishing around those round structures.Jigged large spoons where fish were marked in 60 fow. Nothing. Will get there early tomorrow for live bait if the guy is there.
iRobalo…Have you tried anywhere but the towers yet. IMO, stay away from them and find water 100’ or less. Humps, long flat spots surrounded by much deeper water. Find the fish.
I’ll be out shortly with my granddaughter, hopefully. I’ll be looking along the river channel in the 70’-100’ range.

Are your herring alive when you real them back up. This time of year you often have to change bait a lot. They won’t live long in the warm/low O2 water. You also need to drop them down as fast as possible to get through the warm surface. Also where a quality bait tank comes into play. Your bait can be alive but not lively, big difference.
I noticed that your locator is set on 50 khz. You had some fish in the area, but I bet most of them were a good distance off to the sides of your boat. Set your frequency to 200. You’ll get a narrower cone with better detail of just what’s right under your boat for downrod fishing. Give that a try, and you should get better results. My 2 cents.
