Monkey Island

I hear folks talking about Monkey Island near Edisto. I have 2 young kids that would get a kick out of seeing the monkeys (assuming it is true you can acually see them). Can somone tell me how to get there from the Marina…and if there are any areas to be concerned about (sand bars, shallow water, etc).

Thanks in advance.

You’ve got it all wrong my friend. The monkeys are at the landing by 11 on Saturdays.

I think it is called Morgan Island. You will see it and its location if you Google it.

it’s morgan island and it’s really difficult to get there unless you know the way.

Take the South Edisto from the marina and go to the
■■■■■■■ cut (ICW). Take a left at the ■■■■■■■ cut and then a right heading south in the ICW. You will go thru 2 more cuts and then you’ll be looking at the St Helena Sound. Go across the sound heading directly south on your compass. AS you approach the other side you will see a green marker near the mouth of a creek. Stay to the left of the marker (shallow right) and enter the creek. Take this creek till you see the do not feed the monkey signs. If you’re in the creek and the tide is high enough you will see a small white building. That’s it. Sometimes they are there and sometimes not. Make some noise and sometimes they’ll come out. Neat trip for kids, I hope you see’um.

Late in the afternoon is the best time. Never made much noise but normally just pull up and shut the motor off and they will start to appear.

Look close at the picture and you will see the young hanging onto their mommy monkey.

Man that is cool. My 6yo and 8yo will be very excited. Thanks for the directions and pictures. I think we are going down next weekend and will give it a try.

Once you cross the sound (Coosaw R) that next creek is Parrott Cr - runs behind Morgan Is. It comes out in Morgan R. Go left and down about 1/2 mile. The island is huge but, only part is high ground where the monkeys are. It is the south side of the island that faces Eddings Cr/B’fort where they hang out. Watch out for the mud flat point right in front of the signs about 200-250’ out. Unless at high water you have to go a little past the sandy area with the signs and then turn back in and up. They really make a fuss late afternoon before dusk.:sunglasses:

Is it legal to beach the boat there? Or are those dangerous monkeys?

don’t go near those monkeys. They are almost as dangerous as the killer rabbits in Monty Python and The Quest for the Holy Grail. Stay in your boat or else!!!

Do they smoke?

I’ve got a 24’ I/O . Is there enough water for me to get in to see them ?

Those are very dangerous monkeys. They carry diseases and they will harm you severely if they decide they want to. Monkeys are very powerful animals.

Plus, it is illegal to land on that island if I’m not mistaken.

Just looking at the chart. Is that bass creek on Morgan Island that you go in to see the monkeys ?

Yes you can get in that way, but you can only get in that way at high tide and you better know the way.

If you are unsure go in from the sound.

LB , are you talking about coming in from the Edisto side ? After fishing at the light last year, my son and I rode down and went in just a little way across from Hutchinson Island. Tide was still going out and it was late afternoon , so we headed back to Edisto. Anyway,is that the side you’re talking about ? If so would there be enough water if we came in on an in coming tide ? Looks like that creek would take you around to the high ground on Morgan .

Thanks in advance for the info…just want to play it safe and not get hung up in there .

in this photo bass creek is on the left side of the island and you need to go in from the right side (edisto side) but be careful. take your time and you will be fine

Thanks LB, we’ll be down last week of June.

I think it is best to anchor in the middle of the creek, turn boat off, watch and listen to them. It is a good Sunday afternoon trip/picnic with the family. Look at the monkey at the top right side of photo.
